This invention relates to a clamping device; more particularly it relates to such a Adevice for secnringa garment to an ironing board, the buck of a clothes pressing machine, or the like.

This application is a continuation in part of my copending application entitled Garment clamp filed February 13, 1945, under Serial No. 577,700, new Patent No. 2,452,891, issued November 2, 1948. In said application, a device is disclosed and claimed adapted to span the ironing board and operable by one hand to clamping position to anchor a garment to the board or to release the garment, thus leaving the other hand of the operator free at all times to manipulate and arrange the garment if required. When the garment is secured by the clamp, both of the operators hands are free for this purpose.

` It is an object of this invention to provide an improved device of this character.

In the above mentioned-device, the member for spanning the lironing board and the handle for manipulating the device, are vin extensible relau tion. It is another object of this invention to provide such a device wherein the handle and the spanning are Amaintained in correct alignment for any adjusted `position therebetween and any tendency of the handle to cramp or cock when the member is in any extended position is obvin ated.

It is still another object of this invention to provide such a device capable of use with ironing boards of a substantial range of widths.

It is still a further object of this invention to provide such a device having an improved spring arrangement for opposing extension of the clamp.

This invention possesses many other advantages and has other objects which may be made more easily apparent from a consideration oi several embodiments of the invention. For this purpose there are shown several forms in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. These forms will now be described in detail, illustrating the general principies of the invention; but it is to be understood that this detailed description is not to be taken in a limiting sense, since the scope of the invention is best deiined by the appended claims.

Referring to Figures 1 and 2, a device incor porating features oi the invention is generally indicated by the numeral I and is shown as applied to the buck member 2 of a conventional clothesI pressing machine, anchoring the end of one leg 3 of a pair oi trousers thereto. The buck member 2 is shown as comprising a hollow metal body adapted to be supplied With steam in the usual manner, and having a slightly convex upper sui race d--a covered by sui-table protective padding 5. It is to be understood that the use of the device `with a buck of this type, is shown by way of example only, and that a device lsuch as I equally -useiul with bucks of other types and with ironing boards in general.

Referring particularly to Figure 3, the device i comprises a hollow handle I with a bore having f a reduced-portion 8-aat its forward end forming a shoulder S and slidably accommodating `an elongated clamping member I8 which extends through the handle The rear end of the handle 'I is provided with a cap ii suitably secured thereon and having an aperture II-a cooperating with the reduced bore @-a to guide member I. The outer end of the member Id has a hook Il-a formed `thereon which is in com operative relation with a hook I2 secured to the forward end of the handle l. A compression spring I3 extending about the member it is accommodated in the bore 8, being confined between the shoulder 9 and a collar I4 held in place on the mem-ber IB, as by a pin I5.

The arrangement is such that the spring i3 urges 4the ymember I@ inwardly through the handie l, causing the hooks I il-a and I2 to approach, such movement being 'limited by engagement of the pin I5 and cap i I, so that the hooks Ill-a and I2, when the device is not in use, are separated by a distance somewhat less than the `width of the buck or ironing board 2. Thus, when the device is applied, the hooks Ill-a and I2 are moved apart against the force of the spring I3 and grip the opposite edges of the board 2 in response to the force of the spring, confining the board between the hooks I-a and I2.

In using the clamping device, the garment or portion thereof to be pressed, such as the trouser leg 3, is placed on the ironing board 2 and the handle 1 grasped by the operator. The device I is then manipulated so that the elongated clamping member I0 extends downwardly across the particular part of the garment to be clamped, such as the cui 3-a of the trouser leg, and the hook IO-a engaged over the far edge 2--a of the ironing board 2, as shown by the broken lines of Figure 2. The handle I is then pulled away from the hook IIJ-a until the hook I2 clears the near edge 2-b of the board and lowered to bring i the member I 0 against the trouser cui 3-a. The handle I is then released to allow hook I2 to grip the near edge 2-b of the ironing board 2.

The earn-like action caused by the engagement of the hooks I U-a and I2, and the curved ironing board edges 2-a and 2-b respectively in response to the force exerted by the spring I3, causes that portion of the clamping member I0 to be pressed forcibly against the trouser cuff 3-a, anchoring the cuff against movement on the ironing board 2. This clamping action of the member I0 may be augmented by providing some resilience in the member.

It will be noted that but one hand is required to apply the clamp, thus allowing the operator free use of his other hand to adjust the garment during the clamping operation, an important advantage.

In the modified form of clamp shown in Figures 4, 5 and 6, a hollow handle I1 is provided as before, having a thin walled cylindrical chamber I8 intermediate its ends for reducing the weight. The end portions IT-a and I'I-b of the handle |'I have aligned openings I9 and 20 for slidably accommodating an elongated clamping member 2| of generally flat rectangular cross section, which extends through the handle I 1. The member 2| has a hook member 2Ia formed on its outer end. A cooperating hook 22 is secured on the forward end of the handle |'I in any suitable manner, for example as by having a tongue 22-a conned in a groove I'I-a in the handle I1 by cap or ferrule 23.

A tension spring 24 mounted above the member 2| serves to urge the hooks 2|a and 22 toward each other and to grip the ironing board 2. The outer end of the spring 24 is attached to the outer end member 2l by an arcuate clip 25, and extends inwardly of the handle II through aligned bores 28 and 21 provided therein. The

inner end of the spring 24 is anchored to the handle I'I by means of a cross pin 28 which spans the rear end of bore 25 and is shown as having small projections 28-a engaging recesses 29 in the handle I'I, A cap or ferrule 30 maintains the pin thin metal strip 32 may be provided along the top of the member 2|, secured to member 2| at the ends thereof by screws 33 and 34.

This form of clamp is applied to the ironing board 2 in the same manner and has the same clamping action as the first described form of the invention.

I claim:

1. A clamping device for use with an ironing board or the like, comprising: a hollow handle; a hook member xed thereon; a second hook member for cooperating with the iirst mentioned hook member; an elongated clamping member adapted to span said ironing board and carrying said second hook member, said clamping member extending through said handle and being slidable therein; and spring means disposed adjacent one side of said clamping member, connected between said handle and said clamping member, urging movement between said handle and said clamping member to cause said hook members to approach and grip the ironing board.

2. A clamping device for use with an ironing board or the like, comprising: a hollow handle; a hook member fixed thereon; a second hook member for cooperating with the first mentioned hook member; an elongated clamping member adapted to span said ironing board and carrying said second hook member, said clamping member extending through said handle and being slidable therein; and spring means disposed adjacent one side of said clamping member, and at least partly within said handle, connected between said handle and said clamping member, urging movement between said handle and said clamping member to cause said hook members to approach and grip the ironing board.

3. A clamping device for use with an ironing board or the like, comprising: a hollow handle; a hook member fixed thereon; a second hook member for cooperating with the rst mentioned hook member; an elongated clamping member adapted to span said ironing board and carrying said second hook member, said clamping member extending through said handle and being slidable therein; a fabric covering enclosing said clamping member; spring means disposed adjacent one side of said clamping member connected between said handle and said clamping member to cause said hook members to approach and grip the ironing board; and a protective strip secured on said member between said spring means and said covering.
