Patented May 12, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural renements in pads for shoulder straps, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a. device of the character herein described, such as may be conveniently and effectively employed with shoulder straps of slips, girdles, brassieres, and other similar garments, for the purpose of safeguarding against abrasion of skin resulting from pressure which the usual, narrow, unpadded conventional straps exert.
Some of the advantages of the invention reside in its simplicity of construction, in the comfort resulting from its use, in its inconspicuous nature, in its adaptability to expeditious installation or removal, and in its adaptability to economical manufacture.
With the above more important objects and features in View and such other objects and features as may become apparent as this specication proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garment on the person of a user, the shoulder straps of the garment being equipped with the invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective View of a base member plate and keeper prongs used in the invention;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3 3 in Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional YView, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 3.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a shoulder strap pad which is designated generally by the reference character IIJ and embodies in its construction an elongated base member I2 of flexible material, which is adapted to be positioned longitudinally under a shoulder strap I4, the base I2 being provided at its longitudinal edges with upturned flanges I6 so as to afford a groove, so to speak, in which the shoulder strap is positioned.
The base member I2 is preferably constructed from a flexible metallic plate I8 which is fully enclosed by a jacket 29 of satin or other fabric, while a liner of relatively soft, plushy material 22 is provided on the jacket at the underside and longitudinal edges of the plate I8, as is best shown in Figure 4.
Opposite end portions of the base member plate IB are provided with upwardly struck regions 24 which define transversely elongated, open ended keeper seats at the underside of the plate, while bendable rods 28 have intermediate portions 30 thereof positioned in the seats 26 and have end portions dening pairs of prongs 32. These prongs project from the open ends of the seats 26 above the base member I2 and are bent in overlapping relation over the jacket covered regions 24 and over the shoulder strap I4 as shown in Figure 1, whereby to sustain the entire pad in postion.
The prongs 32 terminate at their free end in spherical extremities 34 whereby the prongs are prevented from catching7 and tearing the shoulder straps. The straps "may be slid alternately under rst one prong and then the second prong to expedite either the removal of the pad or the insertion of the pad, without necessitating a rebending of the prongs after the latter are once bent into position.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention Will be clearly apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A shoulder strap pad comprising an elongated base member of flexible material adapted to be positioned under a shoulder strap and having end portions provided with upwardly struck regions extending transversely of the base member between points spaced inwardly from side edges of the member whereby to provide transversely elongated and open-ended keeper seats at the underside of the base member, and bendable rods having intermediate portions thereof positioned in said seats, end portions of said rods projecting from the open ends of the seats above said base member and constituting shoulder strap engaging prongs.
