WALTON NELSON, or WHEELING, WEST vIRcINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK W. 'BAUMEROF SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR STRAPS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,916, dated November 12, 1889.
. Application filed April 16, 1889- $erial No. 307,410. (No model.)
i To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, WALTON NELSON, of
Wheeling, in the county of Ohio and State of est Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Strap Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drztwingsfiorming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan View of the same. Fig. 8 is an enlarged i11- verted plan view of the same, and Fig. a is an enlarged side elevation of the same.
c The improved strap attachment Ais mounted to slide on the strap B, supportingasatchel O or other article. The attachment A is provided with a sheet-metal strip D, having on its ends upwardly-turned flanges E, forming 3 5 a guideway for the passage of the strap B. On
the under side of the sheet-metal strip D is held a strip F of flexible material, such as rubber. The flexible strip F is held in place on the metal strip D by lugs G, formed on the 40 ends of the metal strip D and bent over the ends of the flexible strip F, as is plainly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The lugs G prevent endwise motion of the flexible strip F, and in order to prevent sidewise motion of the latter 5 the metallic strip D is provided in its middle with lugs H, bent over the under side of the flexible strip F, as is plainly shown in Figs. 3
and 4. The flexible strip F is also securely locked in place by rivets J, passing through the lugs G and the said strip F. The flexible 5o strip F is thus securely held in place on the under side of the metallic strip D, and as the latter is made of thin sheet metal it can easily be bent to conform to the shape of the shoulder or other part on which the strap is to be carried. The flexible strip F maybe smooth on its under side; but I prefer to make said flexible strip F with a roughened surface I, as illustrated in the drawings.
The device is attached to the strap B by passing the latter through the flanges E on top of the metal strip D.
WVhen the operator desires to carry the strap on his shoulder, the attachment is placed on the bent part of the strap, as illustrated in Fig. 1, so that when the strap is hung over the shoulder the flexible strip F rests on the shoulder and bends to the shape of the same.
Thus it will be seen that the weight of the satchel or other article supported by the strap is equally distributed over the shoulder part covered by the attachment, and at the same time the strap is held in place by the roughened surface, permitting a sliding motion of the strap in case the satchel or other article is shifted. It will further be seen that the V attachment always remains in place on the shoulder, and consequently prevents the wear of the dress, which so frequently occurs when carrying the ordinary strap over the shoulder.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. As a new article of manufacture, a strap attachment comprising an attaching strip having a flexible strip on its under face, substantially as set forth.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a strap attachment comprising an attaching strip having strap-receiving guides on its upper side and a flexible strip 011 its lower face, substantially as set forth.
3. An attachment for straps, comprising a strip of sheet metal, clamping-lugs formed on the under side of the said strip of sheet metal, 5 guides formed on top of the said strip of sheet metal and adapted to receive the strap, and a strip of flexible material held on the under side of the said metallic strip by the said clamping-lugs, substantially as shown and described.
4.The combination, with a strap, of aflexible strip provided on its under side Where ii engages the wearer with a flexible strip to prevent it from slipping, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination, with a strap, of a flexible strip 011 the under side thereof and guides on the upper side of the strip through which. the strap passes, substantially as set forth.
6. An attachment for straps, consisting in a flexible shoulder strip for the bend of the strap and strap-engaging guides or loops at the upper side of the strip, substantially as set forth.
7. In a strap attachment, the attachingstrip D, formed of a strip of sheet metal having its ends formed with attaching-flanges E E and receiving-flanges G G and receivingfianges II II on its sides between its ends, substantially as set forth.
