Description

Jan. 12, 1943.
L. C. PATTERSON PRESSING CLAMP Filed March 12, 71941 Patented Jan. 12, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PRESSING CLAMP Lemuel Curtis Patterson, Fairview, Okla.
Application March 12, 1941, Serial No. 383,009
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in clamps to be used on the buck of a pressing machine, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simplified and more easily utilized device of this character which is especially adapted to use in the pressing of trousers.
Other important objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from a reading of the folowing description taken in connection with the appended drawing, wherein for purposes of illustration I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a general top plan view showing the buck of a pressing machine with the embodiment of the invention in use to position the cuffends of the legs of a pair of trousers on the buck.
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken through Figure 1 along the line 2-2 and looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan View of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the nu meral 5 generally designates my improved clamp which consists of a handle 6 of suitable heat insulating material of adequate structural strength which is substantially elongated and provided in the general form of a tapered triangular portion 1 tapering from both lateral sides on its lower part as indicated by 'the numerals 8 and 9 to provide a comfortable grip for the fingers, the said part terminating in an enlarged pendent knob Ill at the rear extremity of the handle providing a smooth abutment for the edge of the hand in applying and removing the clamp from the buck ll of the pressing machine which is generally designated l2 and includes the steaming and pressure pad l3 which is operable into a superposed relation with respect to the buck l l in steaming and pressing operations.
Attached to and extending along the bottom of the straight flat under side of the handle 6 is a flat spring metal shank M which terminates in a crook I5 which has an outwardly deflected terminal l6.
In utilizing the device of the invention the trousers ll fresh from the cleaning operation and in a rumpled and unshaped condition is laid with approximate accuracy on the top of the buck H. In this condition of the trousers the legs including the cuff portions l8 require approximate forming and substantial holding before the initial steaming with the element l3. To facilitate this operation the cuff equipped ends of the trousers are laid in proper position on the buck II and when so positioned the clamp 5 is applied simply by reaching behind the rear edge of the buck H with the crock I5 and drawing the clamp toward the operator, so as to apply the shank portion l4 on top of the upper cuff of the trousers, whereat the spring action of the crook It; goes into play to clamp the trouser bottoms between the shank l4 and the top of the buck H with the lower part of the crock frictionally engaged with the bottom of the buck, in which positions the parts remain until the operator grasps the handle 6 of the clamp 5 and pushes the clamp away from him so as to release the crook i5.
With the clamp in place, the steaming element l3 can be brought down so as to give initial form to the trouser legs, thereby enabling the clamp 5 to be removed and the element l3 brought down to exert pressure for the final pressing operation.
Although I have shown and described herein a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be definitely understood that I do not desire to limit the application of the invention thereto except as may be required by the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A pressing clamp for application to the buck of a pressing machine to clamp the cuff-ends of a pair of trousers in pressing position on the buck, said clamp comprising a relatively rigid handle of bar-like form having a flat under side, a straight flat shank extending from the flat under side and one end of the handle to overlie said cuff-ends of the trousers, and a spring crook on the outer end of said shank and on the side of the shank opposite to the handle side to embrace the back edge of the buck, said crook having a terminal to engage under the bottom of said buck, and exert pressure in an opposite direction from said shank to hold the cuff-ends of the trouser legs down in place on said buck, said clamp being free of engagement with the forward edge of the buck whereby the clamp may be readily removed rearwardly of the buck and released therefromby rearward movement of the handle.
