This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in pressing irons and stands, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, wherein electric current is supplied to the iron while the latter is positioned on the stand, thereby eliminating the conventional cord which is usually attached to the iron and rendering such iron self-contained, as it were, for convenient use without the interference of such cord;
A further object of the invention is to provide a pressing iron and stand wherein the iron may be readily applied and removed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a pressing iron and stand which is simple in construction, safe and dependable in operation, and which will not easily become damaged.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a pressing iron and stand which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan View of the stand.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the stand, partially broken away, showing the iron in situ thereon.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 3-3 in Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line l4 in Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are used to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a pressing iron and stand designated generally by the reference character In, the same embodying in its construction a base H configurated substantially as shown and including an elevated platform l2 supported by downturned marginal flanges (3.
It will be noted that the platform l2 conforms substantially to the outline of the body portion [4 of the iron l5, the latter being hereinafter more fully described.
The platform I2 is disposed in an inclined plane and is provided with a plurality of upstanding 2 ribs IS on which the iron may be conveniently positioned.
The base i l is also equipped with an upstanding shield ll, this being disposed adjacent the lower end of the platform l2 and. carrying a pair of spaced contact terminals 58. The terminals it are elongated and have an inverted V-shaped cross-sectional configuration, as is best shown in Figure 1. Each terminal is formed integrally with a prong E9, the two terminal prongs projecting rearwardly through the shield i! and being adapted to receive an attachment plug 29 of conventional design, provided at one end of a suitable cord 2|.
The upper end portion of the shield ll is arcuated forwardly and downwardly to provide a cam surfaced tongue 22, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully explained.
The iron !5 is provided on the body portion l4 thereof with a pair of supports 23, 26, attention being particularly directed to the support 24 which extends upwardly and rearwardly and provides a further cam surface 25. The supports 23, 24, of course, carry a suitable handle 26.
The iron is also provided adjacent the rear end thereof with a pair of prongs 21, these terminating in horizontally disposed, elongated terminal posts 28. It will be noted that the posts 28 are substantially triangular in cross-sectional configuration and that they are complementary to the terminals is, as is best shown in Figure 4.
When the invention is placed in use, the attachment plug 20 is simply engaged with the prongs l9 and the iron !5 is positioned upon the platform l2. The inclination of the platform will normally urge the iron in the direction of the arrow 29, resulting in the engagement of the cam surface 25 with the cam surface 22. By virtue of this contact, the rear end portion of the iron will be urged upwardly and the posts 28 will be brought in contact with the terminals I8, as will be clearly understood.
As a result, as long as the iron remains in position on the stand, current will flow through the cord 2| to the iron and the latter will be heated to the required degree, as may be regulated by a conventional thermostatic control 38 with which the iron is usually provided.
The iron may be simply disengaged from the stand in order to perform the ironing operation and since the heat generated in the iron during its rest upon the stand is suificient for the performance of periodic ironing tasks, electric current need not be supplied to the iron while ironing, and the interference of the conventional attachment cord will thus be eliminated.
It should be also noted that the provision of the arcuate tongue 22 on the shield 17 will effectively protect the user from coming in contact with the terminals It.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention wiil be clearly understood from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is considered unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction,fcombination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. A pressing iron and stand, comprising in combination, a base, a plurality of spaced parallel longitudinal ribs formed on said base, adapted to removably receive the iron thereon, an upstanding shield provided at one end of said base, a pair of elongated contact terminals on said shield, 21 pair of terminal posts at the rear end of said iron, said terminals having an inverted V-shaped cross-sectional configuration, said posts being substantially triangular in cross-section and engageabie with said terminals, said iron including an upwardly and rearwardly extending handle support and the upper portion of said shield being forwardly and downwardly arcuated to form a cam-surfaced tongue, said tongue b ing engageable with said support.
2. The combination of claim 1 wherein said ribs are disposed in a plane inclined to the horizontal and sloping downwardly toward said shield.
3. The combination of claim 1 wherein said support overlies said tongue.
