SHIELD FOR PROTBGTING WATER-BAGKS IN RANGES AND STOVES.
dlgs .stimule referrer to in time @that what mn linking und nf tige simu.
Be it known that I, M. J. WELLMAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Water-Backs in Cooking-Ranges and other Fire-Grates; and I do hereby describe and ascertain my said improvement, referring tothe accompanying drawing, in which' the invention is shown in section.
It is well known that in winter great danger and inconvenience ure experienced by the freezing of the pipes v leading to water-backs as now arranged, and many casualties by explosion and bursting have arisen, endanger'- ing lives and causing the destruction of property thereby. My improvement is to guard against danger of this y kind, and enable the domestic to make a fire for cooking, Svc., at all times without risking an explosion. in the coldest weather. l
The construction is as follows:` The water-back a is made in the ordinary way, with its pipes of supply and discharge, as heretofore constructed. The grate b and itsrelative position to the water-back'are also of ordinary form and position. My improvement consists in interposing between thc water-back a and the fire-chamber formed by the grate b, a plate of metal, c, which can be brought forward into the position shownin the drawing, so es to leave an air-space between the water-back and the fire, through which the air can freely circulate,
and thus prevent the water-back from becoming so heated as to produce a. dangerous pressure therein. The
plate c is made to move forward and back in any convenient way by being attached to the top plate ofthe range, as seen in the drawing, with a knob at d to move it by; or it may have an arm projecting from it backward, and ai'lxed to the water-back, or otherwise; or it may be alxed to and form a. part of the grate, which latter will then slide forward and back with it. rWhen it is ascertained that the current of water is free und unimpeded through the water-baelgthe plate c can be slid back against it, and thewater heated therein as usual. In addition to the safety thus obtained, and the convenience thereof, the guard-plate protects the waterback against burning-out; and the plate itself being cheap, can readily be renewed when burnt outor injured by the heat of the tire.
Having thus fully described my improvement in protecting water-backs in ralnges, 85e., I clam.
The metallic plate between the water-back and the fire, and forming the .back of the fire-place, and protecting the water-back at all times,-so constructed and arranged as to rest against the water-back when the water-back is Vto be heated, and `to be moved forward and permit :t current of air to pass up between the said water-back and the fire-When the heat`of the lire is to be excluded therefrom, as und for the .purposes herein set forth. i.
