Description

A. E. CHAMBERLAIN.
Cook Stove.
Patented April I9, 1864.
3 6n 0 ml'a r W NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADDIS E. CHAMBERLAIN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHAM- BERLAIN & 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,432, dated April 19, 1864.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ADDIS E. CHAMBER- LAIN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to he a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My improvement relates to an improved manner of applying and securing a deflecting plate or screen within the fire-chamber of a cookingstove, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the fire chamber and hearth of a stove provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 shows my screen detached from the stove. Fig. 3 represents the broiling-cover. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through one end of my screen.
A, B, C, D, and E represent, respectively, the fire'chamber, the ash-pit, the top and front plates, and thesliding hearth of an ordinary cooking stove.
F represents my deflecting plate or screen, so fixed in the stove as to intervene between the fire and the firedoors, and, by inclining inwardly toward its lower part, acting to lead the draft to the under side of the fire near its mid-width, the draft. being in this way applied to the fire in the most et'fieient manner and the entrance of cold air direct to the flue prevented.
G G are wings, which, projecting forward from the ends of the plate F, flank the door opening on each side and shut out the external air.
.An inwardly-projecting flange, H, at the bottom of the screen acts to stiffen the plate and to conduct the draft well to the middle of the fire.
The plate F is still further stiffened and protected from too direct contact of the fire by, means of flutings I.
Beside the customary projections employed to confine stove-plates in their places, my plate F is additionally secured by means of ears J J, which are confined between the cus' tomary clamp-rods and the front plate, D. The plate 13 is perforated near its top and provided with a sliding register, K, which being opened, the effinvia of broiling is enabled to escape into the fire.
I The register K may also be opened purpose of checking combustion.
L is a cover, which, being placed upon the hearth when the stove is being employed for broiling, serves to expedite the cooking action and to confine the effluvia. l are air-inlets in the cover L.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- The deflecting plate or screen F, constructed as described, with cheeks G G, flange H, ears J J, and a register, K, the said screen being secured within the fire-chamber, as herein specified, and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony of which invention 1 hereunto set my hand.
