Description

J. SIMPSON; Parlor Cooking Stove.
No. 44.348. Patented Sept. 20, I864.

N4 PETERS. Piwluliihugnphm. wamin m. 11c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH SIMPSON, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PARLOR COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 44.348, dated September 20, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH SIMPSON, of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, makir g a pait of the specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improvement; Fig. a front sectional elevation of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention pertains to that class of de vices known as parlor cooking-stoves.
The several plates, doors, damper-rods, ashholders, 850., except as hereinafter specified, are constructed and combined together in the usual manner practiced by stovemakers, and therefore require no special description.
The loop A of the front or fire door, B, is, however, cast separately from the front plate, 0. The usual mode is to cast the hinge loop A and theloop of all the hinges with and upon the plate 0 or other plate upon which the door is to swing; but in my improvement I cast the hinge-loops (represented by A) separately, with edges of dovetail form, and I cast with and upon the plate 0, or other plate to which said loops are to be applied, two projecting lips, a a, of dovetail form at their inner edges, corresponding to the edges of the loop A, said lips being so made as to receive and hold between them the loop A.
When the hinge-loops are cast with the plates, the said loops are liable to break ofi' by any accidental falling open of the door, and such breakage is attended with much inconvenience and expense in repair, owing to the difficulty of attaching a new hinge to the face of a east-iron plate.
By the use of my improvement, whenever a loop breaks it may be quickly replaced by slipping in a new one between the lips a a. This improvement is, of course, applicable to all the hinges connected with stoves.
Referring again to the drawings, D is the fire-chamber; E, the back plate thereof 5 F, the oven G G G, a fire-flue passing around the oven, and H the chimney or escape-flue.
Fire having been placed in the chamber D, the heated products thereof rise and pass through the opening at the top of back plate, E, into and down flue G to and along horizontal flue G, thence rising through flue G" and escaping at H, as indicated by the several arrows. The entire heated products of combustion are thus made to circulate around the oven F.
Attached to the back plate, E, below the grate, is a damper, I, which covers an opening through the back plate into the base of the flue G. When the damper I is opened, air will enter flue G and mingle with the products of combustion, as indicated by red arrow and lines. The draft of the stove and the heat imparted to the contents of the oven may be regulated with the utmost precision and convenience by simply adjusting the damper I.
Above the oven, between the upper ends of the flues G G and in front of the chimney H, is another damper, J, which, when closed, compels the products of combustion to circulate around the oven in the manner before described; but when the damper J is open the products of combustion will pass directly out from the fire into the chimney H without circulating around the oven, as indicated by the red lines and arrow.
Havingthus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. Having the hinge-loops made movable,
in the manner and for the purpose substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the dampers I J with the tlues G G G, ovenF, and fire-chamber D, in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
JOSEPH SI MPSON.
