ELI A. BURT AND HERMAN HARRIS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
MOURNlNG-BAND FOR HATS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 646,951, dated April 10, 1900.
Application filed October 2 0, l 8 9 9.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, ELI A. BURT and HER- MAN HARRIS, residents of New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mourning-Bands; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention relates to an improvement in mourning-bands, and more particularly to means for securing mourning-bands in place on a hat, the object of the invention being to provide simple and inexpensive means for securing a band on a hat and maintain the band smooth and in an upright position.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrange men ts of parts,
and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a View illustrating our improvements, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4: are views of details.
A represents a mourning-band of any approved material, which is secured at its respective ends by our improved clamp B. The clamp B is made, preferably, of sheet metal, and made a little shorter than the width of the band A, to which it is to be secured, and is bent longitudinally at two points between its edges to form two jaws 1 2 and an intermediate body portion 3. The jaw 1 overlaps the jaw 2, and the ends of the band are first placed between the jaw 2 and body 3, and the jaw 1 is then bent back upon the band and securely clamped in place by means of projections 4, formed by punching.
It will be seen that the jaw 1 when clamped in place will hold the body portion 3 fiat Serial No. 734,234. (No model.)
in the general form and arrangement of the several parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, and hence we would have it understood that we do not wish to limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of our invention.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An article of manufacture consisting of a mourning band for hats provided at its meeting ends with a clamp composed of a single piece of sheet metal bent longitudinally at two points between its edges to form two overlapping jaws and an intermediate body portion, said clamp adapted to secure the ends of the band between said jaws and body portion.
2. An article of manufacture consisting of a mourning-band for hats provided at its meeting ends with a clamp composed of a single piece of metal bent longitudinally at two points between its edges to form two overlapping jaws and an intermediate body portion, the ends of the band placed between one jaw and the body portion and the other jaw clamping said band between both of said jaws and the body portion.
In testimony whereof we have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
