METHOD OF OPENING, SHUTTING, AND FASTENING BLINDS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 6,466, dated May 22, 1849.
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, VESLEY CHASE, of Butt'alo, in the county of Erie and State of Y New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Opening, Closing, and Fastening lVindow Blinds, Shutters, or Doors and for other Purposes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawing of the same, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the ape paratus applied to a. door. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are views of the apparatus detached from the door and its parts disconnected.
My invention and improvement consists in casting or otherwise securing pinions of equal size and similar form upon the stationary and movable parts respectively of butt hinges, in such a manner that they will both be concentric with the axis of the hinge, and parallel with, and either resting upon or near each other, a. turning rack being provided which takes into the pi'nion of the movable part which it turns when moved longitudinally either way and giving tothe door or blind to which it is attached, a corresponding motion, until it is brought into the required position, when the rack is turned so as to engage its teeth in both the lixed and movable pinion, which thus locks them with the parts of the hinge to which they are respectively attached., firmly together, and in this manner fastens the door shut,A or open at any required angle. rlhe rack is held in gear with either or both the pinions by means of a tubular slide which extends between the inner, and outer sides of the frame.
In the accompanying drawings the door A and frame B are represented as being made in the usual manner, and the hinges C are attached to them by screws or otherwise.
The fixed part a of the hinge is attached to the frame B and the movable part to the door, each part having a pinion either cast in one piece with, or secured to it in any convenient and suitable manner.
The rack d moves in a tubular slide made through 'the frame for that purpose, and when turned in the position shown in Fig. l it takes only into t-he movable pinion n and is consequently in the proper position for turning the door.
To the inner end of the shank of the rack a knob or handle 7", ornamented or plain is aixed which is for t-he purpose of being taken hold of, to push or pull the rack, to open and close the door by turning the pinion and hinge.
When the door is placed in the required position the shank drops down and the notches e on its under side engage with a descent or stop with which it is held in gear by a .button hung on a pivot on the inner side of the frame B and which turns down upon it.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the turning rack with the fixed and movable pinions attached to the hinge substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
