' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY J. EUMEILLE, oE oAMDEN, NEW JERSEY.
HAIR-CRIMPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,214, dated February 27, 1900.
i Application filed Otto'be 2, 1899. Serial No. 732,265. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, HENRY J. RUMRILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hair-Curlers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of an improvement in hair-curlers whereby the same may be heated without danger of burning the hand of the operator and quickly and easily placed in position.
It further consists of novel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter set forth and described.
Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of a' hair-curler embodying my invention, one
` of the parts being shown in dierent positions therein. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section of the device as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof on line o; w, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a hair-curler formed of a metallic tube B, which is adapted to receive a plug D, which may be inserted in said tube as far as desired, leaving a portion of the same outside of the tube as a handle.
E designates a tongue or clamp on the exterior of the tube, the same having a limb G, which is inserted between said tube B and said plug D, thus holding said clamp in position, said plug being preferably formed of wood or other material a poor conductor of heat. Journaled in said plug is the loop F, which is adapted to swing backward and forward, as desired, and in the present instance is formed of twisted wire.
The operation is as follows: The loop F is thrown back and the tube heated while being held-by the wooden plug D, the hand thus being prevented from being burned. The end of the hair is then placed between said tube and the tongue E, and thus primarily clamped on said tube as said tongue is firmly held at one end, and so by its resiliency presses the hair against the tube. The device is now turned by .the handle portion of the plug, so that the hair is rolled on the tube and clamped,
"after which the loop F is swung over the roll of hair to retain the same and prevent it from unwinding. When the hairis curled, the loop is again thrown back and the roll slipped or stripped from the tube, after which another lock of hair may be applied to the tube and subjected to the operations above stated. As the loop F is mounted on the plug, it is not liable to be heated prior to the heating of the tube, and so may be handled with safety while turning it over upon the hair. Again, when the device is in use, as the bend of the loop occupies a position at the end C of the tube, it prevents displacement of the plug D, while the limb G of the tongue E, interposed between the tube and plug,v may assist in more tightly holding the plug ip the tube,
and the tongue retains a firm c ction with the tube. y
It will also be evident that var.l s changes may be made in the construction which will come within the scope of my invention, and I therefore do not desire to be limited to the exact form herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
1. A hair-curler consisting of a heatingtube, a longitudinally-extending tongue rigidly held at one end thereon, a plug of heatnon-conducting material partly occupying said tube and partly projecting outside of the same, and a swinging loop having its journals mounted on the outside portion of said plug.
2. In a hair-curler, a tube, a plug therein, a tongue on the exterior of said tube, and a loop journaled on said plug, said tongue being provided with a limb which is inserted between said tube and plug.
3. A tube, a longitudinally extending tongue thereon,'a handle-plug of heat-nonconducting material partly entering said tube, a loop mounted on said plug adapted to be swung over said tube, and a primary clamping device on said tube, said device having a limb which is inserted between said tube and plug.
HENRY J. RUMRILLE.
