Description

No. 644,083. I PatentedFeb. 27, I900. r. c. LEAVITT.
SASH HOLDER AND LOOK.
(Application filed July 15, 1899.)
(No Model.)
FRED C. LEAVITT, OF GRANTHAM, NEIV HAMPSHIRE.
SASH HOLDER AND LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 644,083, dated February 27, I900.
Application filed July 15, 1899. Serial No. 723,949 (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED O. LEAVITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grantham, in the county of Sullivan and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Holder and Lock; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to a combined sash holder and lock; and among the many objects in view is the provision of a device of this character by means of which the sash cords and weights may be dispensed with and the sash when elevated be retained in any desired adjustment and when lowered be locked against opening by a person from without.
With this object in view the invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of one side of a window-frame, illustrating the application of my invention, showing the lower sash in its lowered position and locked. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the sash elevated and retained in its elevated position, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
In the drawings, 1 denotes one of the sides of a window-frame, 2 the upper sash, and 3 the lower sash.
4 denotes a lever pivoted to the windowframe, and 5 denotes a spring the energy of which is exerted to throw the lower end of the lever in the path of movement of the lower sash.
6 denotes a spring-arm having a detent 7, adapted to engage a fixed stud or post 8 and retain the lower end of the lever in the position shown in Fig. 3. This spring-arm projects within the path of movement of the lower sash.
In operation, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 3, the sash is elevated, and,
coming in contact with the spring-arm, disagainst movement from a person without. It
will thus be seen that the device is automatic and will hold the sash by-friction in its vertical adjustment and securely lock it when it is closed.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-- A spring-actuated pivoted lever, adapted to be secured within the window-frame, and having one of its ends crossing the path of movement of the lower sash, a spring-arm secured to said lever and in one position adapted to cross the path of movement of the sash, and a post adapted to be engaged with the spring-arm and hold the free end of the lever away from the path of movement of the sash, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRED O. LEAVITT.
