Description

No. 643,388. Patented Feb. l3, I900.
J. L. WILLIAMSON.
FIREBACK FUR STUVES.
(Application filed Mar. 80, 1899.)
(No Model.)
I wiiiyzsszs I miormaow lg egfm- JOHN L. WVILLIAMSON, OF PULASKI CITY, VIRGINIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE IIALF TO THEODORE DILGER, OF SAME PLACE.
FIREBACK FOR s'rovns.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,388, dated February 13, 1900.
Application filed March 30, 1899.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN L. WILLIAMSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pulaski City, in the county of Pulaski and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Fireback for Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in firebacks for stoves.
One object of the present invention is to improve the construction of firebacks or linings for stoves, and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device adapted to prevent the center of the fireback or lining of a stove from becoming excessively heated, warping, or being burned out, and capable of being readily renewed at a small cost.
A further object of the invention is to provide a supplemental plate or shield adapted to cause the lining of a stove to be uniformly heated and capable of being readily removed and quickly replaced in position on the lining Without removing thelining from the fireplace.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fireback or lining provided with a device constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the sup plemental plate or shield being removed.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of a portion of the fireback or lining.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding partsin all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a fireback or lining provided in its rearwardly-disposed flange 2 with a recess or cut-away portion 3 for the reception of a flange 4 of a supplemental plate or shield 5, detachably interlocked with the fireback or lining and located in front of the center of the same, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings. The supplemental plate or shield, which receives the direct force of the heat, distributes the same Serial No. 711,118. (No model.)
uniformly over the fireback or lining 1, so that the center thereof does not become heated to a greater degree than the adjacent portions of the same, whereby the said fireback or lining is prevented from being burned out at the center and from warping. The supplemental shield or plate when burned out may be readily renewed ata small cost, and it renders the fireback or lining practically indestructible.
The flange 4, which extends rearward from the top of the supplemental plate or shield, fits in and completes the flange of the fireback or lining 1 and is interlocked with the same, the side edges or walls of the recess or cut-away portion being diverged rearwardly and beveled, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the accompanying drawings. The flange 4 is tapering, and its edges 6 are beveled and diverge to fit the edges 5 of the flange 2, and by this construction the supplemental plate or shield is detachably interlocked with. the stove back or lining 1. The weight of the supplemental plate or lining maintains it in engagement with the fireback or main lining, and it may be readilylifted off the same, and it is adapted to be quickly removed and replaced, as it does not require bolts or similar fastening devices to hold it in position.
The invention has the following advantages: The supplemental plate or shield, which is arranged over the center of the fireback or lining, forms a double wall, and by replacing it when burned out it renders the fireback or lining practically indestructible. It prevents the fireback or lining from being unequally heated at the center, so that the lining will not warp or burn out. The device is retained in engagement with the lining by gravity, and it is detachably interlocked with the same in such a manner that it may be readily lifted out of such engagement without withdrawing bolts or similar fastening devices. When the supplemental plate or a receding top flange provided with a dove tail recess, of a protecting-shield having a 15 receding top flange of dovetail shape adapted to fit Within said recess, and interlock with the flange of the fireback.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereto affixed my signature in 20 the presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN L. WILLIAMSON.
