Description

W. G. LOY.
LOCOMOTIVE BOILER.
APPLICATION FlLED NOV. 15, 1913.
WITNESSES I NVENTOR W/ W 37 M w COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPH co.. WASHINGTON, n, c.
UQQTTE a rnr EFTQ.
' WILLIAM G. LOY, OF MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
LOCOMOTIVE-BOILER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VILLIAM G. LOY,'2L
V citizen of the United States, and a resident of Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Locomotive-Boilers, of which the following is a specification. i L
My invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of locomotive boilers of a type having oneormore partitions or so called water walls extendingv longitudinally across the fire box, div d ng;
said fire box into two or more fuel spaces, from the grate up to the fire tubes' 1n front and from the grate up to the fire door in the rear, leaving one combustion chamber and providing for the deposit of fuel through one fire door.
As is well known,boilersof the locomotive type usually employed for this purposeprovide thisincreased heating surface without increasing the external dimensions or altering the standard shape of the boilers whereby my improved boilers may be mounted on any well known form of locomotive substantially without change. My improvement isnotlimited in application to any specific form of wide fire box boiler as it may be applied to the well known Belpaire, WVootten or Narrow firebox? boilers.
In the following specification and the accompanying sheet of drawings, I have shown my invention in its preferred form, but as this may vary, I clalm all such change as may come within the spirit and scope of my invention and claims. 7
In .the drawings I have shown so much of the outline of a typical locomotive boiler in;
its conventional form as to' enable those skilled in theart to understand and apply my invention.
Specification of Letters Patent.
the front and rear water spaces.
P tented Nov. so, 1915.
Application filed November 15, 1913. Serial n hsonau.
a longitudinal section through a portion of a locomotiveboiler havingwater walls embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 represents a transverse section taken on line m,m of Fig. 1.. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the water wall showing certain-detail of construction hereinafter referred to. a My invention contemplates broadly th provision of one or more water walls whose surface is exposed to the hottest part of the fire, to this end Iarrange the water walls near'the grate now to be described.
V The same reference characters represent the same parts in the difieren-t figures.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1
represents the boiler proper, 2 and 3. are the 7 front and rear water spaces respectively, while l represents the side water spaces.
5 represents the crown sheet, below said crown sheet arelocated my water walls extending from the grate up to the fire tubes at its front and from the grate up to the tube sheet 6 and fire door sheet 7 by patch bolt or rivets 12.
The front end of water wall 9 open .to and communicates directly with the front water space through suitable openings in rear tube sheet 6. The rear end of the water wall is open to and communicates directly with the rear water space 3 through a suitable opening in the door sheet 7, thereby afiording an effective circulation with The central water walls 9 are supported in the usual ,manner by stay bolts, 11, connecting the walls. The water wall 9 is inclined at its top from the center toward the ends to accelerate the ebullition of the steam bubbles into the boiler proper.
As regards the connection of the water walls, with the flue sheet and the inside fire door sheet, said sheets may be flanged inwardly, i. e..toward the center of the fire boX at their openings and the water wall securely riveted to said flange.
I do not desire to restrict myself to welding the oints as shown in Fig. 3, as insome cases I may resort to riveting.
is thought that the advantages thereof Will,
' the usual front, rear, and side water spaces forming the front, rear, and side Water walls of the fire box, combustion chamber, and fire tubes, one or more water walls extending longitudinally across said fire box, at its front connected with the rear flue sheet and its rear ith the inside door sheet, said water walls being flanged outwardly at'the ends where connected to said fiue sheet and door sheet, said sheets having suitable openings to allow water to circulate "through said water wallsallsubstantially as seti fo'rth;
2. In a combination water wall and fire tube boiler of the locomotive type, front, rear, and side water spaces forming the front, rear, and side walls of the fire box, a boiler body extending forwardly from said front water space and having the usual fire tubes arran ed therein, water walls extending longiturinally across the fire box connecting the front and rear water spaces extending from the grate up to the fire door in the rear and from the grate up to the fire tubes in the front, the top of said water 5 wall being inclined from the center upwardly toward the ends to accelerate the ebullition of the steam bubbles into the boiler proper substantially as described.
