G. H. COOPER..
STEAM BOILER.
(No Model.)
UNITED Sintes artnr Orricn,
GEORGE HERBERT COOPER, OF NEW IIESTMINSTER, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
STEAM-BOlLER.
FPBCIEICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 339,383, dated April G, 1886.
Application tiled August 20, 1884. Serial No. ilLOQ, (No model.)
To all whom it may con/cern:
new and Improved Steam -Boiler, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to construct a boilei` with extensive heating-surface and capable oi standing high pressure.
It consists in a series of water boxes or sections, of dat and narrow form, connected a short distance apart, the Space between the,
, several boxes forming` the lines, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying,r drawings, forming part oi' this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of a boiler of the improved construction, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section ot' the same through the lire-box.
The water boxes or sections a are formed ol' sheets ol' iron or steel, connected by short bolts and retained apart a short distance by strips b at the edges, so as to torni boxes of' tlat form, the space between the sides being about an inch. Any suitable number of these boxes are placed side by side, with narrow spaces between and connected by braces, so as to form lines that terminate in a smoke box, d, at the rear end ofthe boiler.
Between the sections a, a short distance below the water-line, rods or bars j are placed, which extend from the i'ront plate to the smokebox, and may be bent at the inner ends ofthe sections to extend upward tothe top oi" the sections, as at j. These rods or bars are designed to lit loosely between the sections. and are intended to prevent the flame from rising too high between the sections.
The interior boxes, a., are cut out at the front end to forni a fire box, c, the sides of which are formed by the outside boxes, and the front of the boiler is closed by a plate that has an opening;l to the tire-box, closed by a door. The top and bottom may he covered by plates or by brick-work. ln the upper edges oi' these boxes c recesses are formed all ternately. to allow connection of the steanipipes e, that in turn are connected bya pipe,
f, to a steam-dome, g, and a feed-water pipe is connected inthe same manner at h.
A sai'etyvalve may be connected to the boiler directly. or placed on t-he dome, as shown. A pressure-gage, i, is connected at the front.
The advantages of this construction are, that the boiler has extensive heating-surface compared to the body of water, and there will be consequently economy ot` fuel. The boiler is also capable ot' bearing high pressure, and as each box or section will contain but. a small amount of steam an explosion would be attended with only light results.
I am aware that partitions have been used between the tubes of tubular sectional boilers to form circulating liues and to limit theasceut of the products ot' combustion, and therefore do not claim, broadly, such partitions.
Having thus described my invention. I claim as new and desire to secu re by Letters Patent- 1. In a steaurboiler composed of a series of vertical sections, as a, the alternare sections recessed, as at e, substantially as shown and described, whereby the steam-pipes connecting` the said sections with the steam-domemay be connected at. the sides of the sections, as set forth.
2. in a sectional steamboiler composed of a series of vertical flat boxelike sections, as c, the combination, with said sections, of the bars j, placed longitudinally in the spaces between the sections below the water-line, and extended upward at the rear of the sections, as at j', substantially as shown and described.
GEORGE HERBERT COOPER.
