JACOB HUBER, OF MANSFIELD, oiiIo.
' BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,063, dated. October 8, 1901.
Application filed April 19, 1901. Serial No. 56,610. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB HUBER, acitizen of the United States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improveln cuts in Boilers; and Ido hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains.
to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain improvements in steam-boilers. It has for its object, among other things, to improve the boiler generally, especially as to its heating capacity, and to make it either of the single-type or double type fire-box construction or with a greater number of fire-boxes and otherwise promote its utility.
It consists of the combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a cross-section. Fig. 3 is a modification.
Latitude is allowed herein as to details, as they may be changed or varied at will without departing from the spirit of my invention and the same yet remain intact and be protected.
In carrying out my invention I construct the boiler-casing 1 in its general outline as heretofore. I provide, however, a fire box or chamber proper, 2, in practice having an open or water bottom, with its rear end formed with or terminating in an upward extension or enlargement 2, constituting what may be termed a combustion-chamber. Said firechamber has also connecting or communicating with it at its opposite or forward end, above the fire or fuel door, what may be called a second combustion-chamber 2 extending upward the rest of the height of the boiler? casing. The crown sheet or plate of the fire box or chamber 2, including that of the combustion-chamber 2*, may have riveted thereto stay or crown bars 3. These two combustionchambers 2 2 have communication one with the other by short boilertubes 4, opening thereinto, conducting the combustion products from the rear chamber into the forward chamber, whence they (said products) are passed through additional or longer boilertubes 4: back into the smoke box or chamber 5, as usual in this last respect. Thus the heat or combustion products are caused to pass into the two combustion-chambers 2 2 from the fire-chamber from the rear end and the forward end of the last named, respectively, providingfor the maximum distribution and passage of said products or heat within the least compass or area, and yet providing for the thorough heating of the boiler andthe effectual conversion of the water into steam.
In Fig. 2 are disclosed more fully braces or stay-rods 6, spanning the internal cross-sectional area of the boiler-casing directly above the crown-sheet, with their ends forked or branched, as at 6", and secured in the web portion of opposite T-shaped bars or angleirons 7, bolted or riveted to the side walls of the boiler-casin g for bracing or strengthening said casing, as intimated.
It is noted that my invention is also applicable to marine boilers, wherein any number of fire-boxes may be used.
In Fig. 3 is shown a double type of fire-box boiler embodying my improvements.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. Asteam-boilerhavingcontinuously-communicatingfire-chamber and end combustion- I chambers, said fire-chamber opening directly into each of said end'chambers, substantially as set forth.
2. Asteam-boiler having continuously-com mu nicating fire-chamber and end combustionchambers, and holler-tubes connecting said end combustion-chambers, said fire-chamber opening directly into each of said end chama forward-end upward extension combustionchambers, and boiler-tubes connecting said combustion-chambers and connecting the forward combustion-chamber and smoke box or chamber, said fire-chamber opening directly into each of said forward and rear combustion-chambers, substantially as set forth.
5. In a steam-boiler, a fire-chamber, end combustion-chambers, and tubes connecting said end chambers outside of said fire-chamber, said fire-chamber opening directly into each of said end chambers, substantially as set forth.
6. In a steam-boiler, a fire-chamber, end combustion-chambers opening directly into said fire-chamber and tubes connectingsaid I 5 end chambers outside of said fire-chamber, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature" in presence of two Witnesses.
JACOB HUBER.
