IMPROVEMENT IN SECTIONAL STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 138,792, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 12, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WELLsLY W. CRANE, of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sectional Steam-Generators and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a steamboiler or steam-generator, intended particularly for use on street-railroad cars, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my steamgenerator. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same with the back wall removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective of one of the front corners of the generator. Fig. 4 represents a plan view, showing the coil-pipe above a generator having three water-pipes.
A represents the front of the generator; B B, the water-pipes; and C O, the smoke-pipes, of which the latter there may be one or more through each water-pipe. These parts are intended to be constructed and connected together, and by means of pipes at to connected with the mud-drum D, in the same manner as described in a separate application filed with this, with the exception that for streetcar use the entire front had better be made in one piece, as the boiler need not be so large. G G represent the side walls; and E, the back wall, inclosing the generator and forming, with the front A, the fire-box. These walls are all made separate, and the side walls G G may be made either solid or hollow, and, if hollow, forming a part or addition to the steam-generator. The side walls are then, at the front corners, by pipes b b, connected with the front A- -one at the upper and the other at the lower end, as shown in Fig. 3=-the former for steam and the latter for water con nection. The front and side walls are, of course, in either case bolted firmly together. The lower end of each side wall G is inclined downward, as shown at M, both from the front and rear to the mud-drum or bridge-wall D; which, therefore, becomes the lowest point of the generator, and all sediment must, therefore, necessarily settle in the same. This obviates the necessity for so many hand-hole plates as have heretofore been used, only one being necessary. in this case. solid lined with fire-brick on the inside, and
"bolted to the side walls, so that it can readily be removed when desired for repairing any part of the generator. Some of the connecting-pipes a a. may connect with the side walls in place of with the mud-drum or bridge-wall D, if desired, as shown in Fig. 2. On top of the upper tier of pipes B is a coil-tube, 61, one end connecting with one side wall, and the other end with the other wall,'to form additional heatin g-surface; and between the series of pipes B B small pipes e 6 may be inserted to connect the side walls and form stays for the water-pipes. H represents the top of the fire-box, lined on the inside with fire-brick, and having an aperture, h, leading into the exit-pipe or smokestack J. Over this opening is a damper, I, to be opened, so as to give a direct draft when first raising steam, and afterward closed so as to make a slow combustion.
Although this steam-generator is particularly designed foruse on street-cars, it may be made of any desired size for use for any other purpose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of, the removable fire brick-lined back wall E with the fire-box of a steam-generator, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The removable fire-brick-lined top H, provided with a damper, I, in combination with the fire-box of a steam-generator, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the coil-pipes d d,
The back wall E is with the walls of the fire-box, as and for the In testimony that I claim the foregoing I purposes set forth. I have hereunto set my hand this 9th day of 4. The combination of the hollow Walls A April, 1873.
G bolted together and. connected at top and WELLSLY W. CRANE. bottom by the pipes b b, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. Witnesses:
5. The inclined fire-box bottomM in com- A. N. MARE, bination with the hollow water bridge-wall D, O. L. EVERT.
as and for the purposes set forth.
