Description

H. A. WOOD. Cooking-Stove.
Patented July 9,1878.
9 3 5 0 2 v m N N PEIERS, FHUTOUTHOGRAPHER, WASMINGTO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
HENRY A. WOOD, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKlNG-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 205,939, dated July 9, 1878; application filed March 12, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY A. W001), of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooking-Stoves; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in Which- Figure 1 shows a central vertical section; Fig. 2, a front elevation Fig. 3, modification.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of certain improvements in cooking-stoves, particularly those provided with what is known as a waterfront and anti-clinker grate or either, and will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing.
1n stoves of this construction there is a considerable space (see a in Fig. 1) between the front of the fire-box b and the stove-front 0, into which the cold air from the draft d has entry, keeping the front of the fire-box cool. This is especially objectionable when a waterfront is used, as the heating of the water is greatly retarded. With the anti-clinker grate, the air enters through the opening 0 provided for removing the clinkers, instead of all passin g through the grate f, and causes an irregular and uneven combustion, consuming much fuel without useful results.
To remedy these defects I provide a plate, g, filling the space a at or near the bottom of the grate f, acting as a draft-stopper and cutting ofi all connection between the space a and the drafts d of the stove. This plate may be kept in place in any convenient manner. A further improvement consists in hinging this plate 9 to the inside of the front of the stove at h, in such a manner that when dropped it may act as an ash-chute for the clinkers and ashes removed through the opening 0 in the anti-clinker grate. A stop, 6, is provided to hold it at the proper incline for this purpose, and a handle, j, by which it may be operated from the outside of the stove without opening the door is. The clinkers and ashes may be scraped out of. the grate by inserting the poker through the narrow clinker-door l. A lug, m, holds the plate up when in a horizontal position, and, as shown in Fig. 2, its release is effected by sliding it lengthwise. Other devices for holding it in position may, however, be substituted, one modification being shown in Fig. 3, in which the stop 1', lug m, and handle j are combined; but such 1 consider as within the scope of my invention.
I do not limit my invention exclusively to cooking-stoves having water-fronts and anticlinker grates, or either, it being valuable in any stove having a space, a, between the stovefront and grate-front.
I do not claim an attachment for a magazine-stove for compelling the draft to pass upward through the supply cylinder while kindling the fire and immediately previous to, as well as during the act of, replenishing the cylinder with coal, for the purpose of carryin goff the inflammable gases and preventing explosion, as described in the patent of D. G. Littlefield, No. 37,103 of 1862. My device applies to cooking-stoves and is different in its effect as well as purpose.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a cooking-stove substantially of the Within-described construction, the draft-stopiug-plate 9, cutting off the connection between the space a and the stove-drafts d, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the hinged plate g, handle j, stop 1', and lug m, or its equivalent, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a cooking-stove proi'ided with an anticlinker grate and clinker-door l, a hinged plate, g, adapted to be supported in the different positions described, serving either as a draft-stopper or ash-chute, and operated from the outside of the stove independently of the door k, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of March, 1878.
HENRY A. WOOD. Witnesses:
J OHN K. MASON, WM. FRANKLIN SEAVEY.
