Description

G. R. MOORE.
Apparatus'for Cleaning Fire Chambers;
Patented March-29, 1864.
Nkg
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE R. MOORE, OF LYONS, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR CLEARING FIRE-CHAMBERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 42,102, dated March 29, 1864.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEO. It. MOORE, of Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire and Fuel Separating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare that the t'oliowingisafull and exact description thereof, reference being had 'to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in placing a clamp or shovel, or both combined, as in the description following, in such connection with the fire-chambers of stoves and heating apparatus as to be conveniently used for the purpose of sh ntting off and retaining the main part of the fire and unburned fuel in the fire-chamber and keeping it up in the same while the grate is turned or dropped below and emptied of ashes and cinder, thus avoiding the necessity of allowing the fire to go down when desiring to empty the grate of its refuse from the combustion of the fuel. The
accompanying drawings will show how this is done.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire chamber on feet f ff, and having a revolving grate, g, with a lug upon it, u, and a draw-lever, I.
Fig. 2 shows the interior of the fire-chamher, one of the sides being removed and the burning fuel in a fit state to be separated. i
In this drawing, the clamp C and shovel S are in their natural condition, forming most of one side of the firechamber, and hung by points or journals at 6 and a, to be operated by the hand-lever or poker h, which is about the same as a common fire-poker, with catches 2' upon it-one to hold it in the socket 0 and the other to catch upon the front part of thetirebox to hold the shovel and clamp back (when the fuel is separated) while emptying the grate.
Fig. 3, compared with Fig. 2, shows the movement of the shovel and clamp in separating the fuel.
The lever his an iron rod, to be used, as already shown, for a portable handle to the shovel and clamp, and may also very well be u ed for a poker besides.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The clamp C, operating in combination with the fire chamber of a stove or heater, sub-' stantially as above set forth.
2. The shovel S, connected and operating together with the clamp O, in combination with the fire-chamber of a stove, substantially as above set forth.
GEO. R. MOORE.
