(No Model.)
IN VENTOH James .71. Jilears TATES ATIENT Fries.
JAMESA. MEARS, OF ELIZABETH, NEIV JERSEY.
TIE-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 643,330, dated February 13, 1900..
Application filed October 25, 1898. Serial No. 694,511. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES A. MEARS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, Union county,in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tie-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in holding or retaining devices for neckties, cravats, (to, and has for its object more particularly to provide a simple and efficient holder for bow and other small ties, which holder may be invisibly arranged in the collar and neckband of a shirt beneath the tie to engage and hold the body thereof in position at the front of the collar.
The object above set forth I am enabled to attain by means of my invention, which consists in the novel details of construction and in the combination, connection, and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts, Figure 1 is a side View, greatly enlarged, showing a tieholder constructed according to and embodying myinvention, the head thereof being adjusted for insertion. Fig. 2 is a-similar view showing the head adjusted at right angles to the shank and the engaging device projecting above the same. Fig. 3 is a top or plan view of the holder with the head adjusted to the position illustrated at Fig. 2. Fig. l is a detail top or plan view showing a portion of a neckband, collar, and tie with my holder applied thereto. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail perspective view of a modified form of shank; and Fig. 6 is a section thereof, taken on the line 6 6 of said Fig. 5.
In said drawings, A designates the holder, comprising the base B, upon which is secured a fiat shank 0, having longitudinal clips or ears a a struck up therefrom, and D denotes a head which is adjustably secured to the upper end of the shank (J and provided with a slot 1), which extends partly across said head from its center to a point adjacent to its pe-' riphery.
Edenotes a pin the lowerend of which may be secured to the side of the shank G by soldering or any other convenient manner, but
preferably by clamping the same within the clips or ears or a, as herein shown, and the upper end pointed and free, which pointed end projects upward above the top of the shank Oand through the slot 1) in the head D when the same is adjusted to a position at right angles to the shank.
In the modification illustrated at Figs. 5
and 6 the shank O is provided with loop-sec-- tions ct ct, which are adapted to receive and hold a pin.
It is to be observed that in constructing the holder the pin E should be made of such length that the point thereof will not project beyond the outline of the head D when the same is adjusted to the position indicated at Fig. 1, in order that the edge of the head adjacent to the point will serve as a guard or shield for said pin when the holder is being inserted in the neckband and collar. It is to be further observed that while the holder has been designed more particularly to hold the body of a tie in position at the front of the collar the same may, nevertheless, be applied to the back of a collar to hold the band of the tie and prevent the same from slipping upward upon the collar.
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that the pin E projects forward in a straight line at right angles to the base and maintains this position at all times, although the holder may be slightly turned within the buttonholes by the movements of the wearer. This position of the pin with relation to the base prevents both vertical and lateral movement of the necktie and the disengagement of the tie from the pin by either an upward or sidewise movement of the necktie.
WVithout limiting myself to the details of construction, which may be varied within the scope of the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A tie-holder comprising a base, a shank secured thereto, a head hinged to the end of said shank having a slot therein extending from a point adjacent to the center of said head to a point adjacent to its periphery, and a straight pin arranged parallel to said shank, having one end secured thereto, the free end of said pin being adapted to lie within the circular outline of the head when the latter is turned to a position parallel with its shank,
ter is turned to a position parallel with its shank, and to project beyond said head at right angles thereto when the head is parallel I 5 with the base.
Signed at the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, this 22d day of October, 1898.
JAMES A. MEARS.
