UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY DAVIES, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SKIRT-SUPPORTER AND WAIST-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart Of Letters Patent N0. 642,840, dated February 6, 1900.
Application filed September 24, 1898. Serial No. 691,817. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY DAVIES, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Chicago, Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Skirt-Supporters and Waist-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a skirt-su pporter and waistholder for ladies garments.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangements of a plate of metal provided with hooks upon its ends to be secured to a ladys dress-waist and loops of metal to be se cured to a ladys dress-skirt, so that the said loops may be attached to the hooks provided upon the said plate, so as to support the skirt.
An important feature of myinvention consists in the form of the supporting-hooks and of the position and shape of a projecting portion of the supporter-plate, so as to both guide the slotted loop-pieces and retain them from accidentally unfastening.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows a view of the supporter-plate inserted through a loop of cloth and one of the loop-pieces suspended from one of the hooks of the plate, and Fig. 2 is a view of one of the loop-pieces Z.
The plate p is formed of any suitable material, preferably of thin plate-brass, and has the hooks 77. formed upon its ends, so as to leave narrow recesses 0, as shown. The horizontal portion of the recess 0 should be located near the horizontal middle of the plate 19 and should be extended around the ends of the shoulders m and under them,so that the loop-pieces Z will not become detached accidentally. The width of the hook h and the vertical length of the slot Z should be proportioned to each other so that the hook 7t will approximately fill the slot Z and prevent slack motion between these two parts, and the width or vertical measurement of the narrow recess or slot 0 and the vertical distance from the top of slot Z upward across the upper end of the looppiece should be proportioned so that the recess 0 will be filled, approximately, by that upper end of the loop-piece Z. The looppieces Z are stamped out of similar material and have holes or eyes a and the loop or narrow slot Z stamped out of the pieces, and the eyes n are to be strongly secured to the upper part of a ladys dress-skirt by being sewed on with thread or in any other suitable manner. The slot Z is formed near the upper end of piece Z, and between the slot and the horizontal body of the piece Z the upright or neck portion is twisted a quarter-turn or at right angles to the lower part,so that the plate 19 and the lower part of Z may be in the same plane, approximately, after the book It has been inserted through the slot or loop Z.
The slots or notches 0, formed adjacent to hooks h, should be but little wider than sufficient to receive the piece Z at its upper or loop end, and the loop or slot Z should be but little longer vertically than the vertical distance from the slot 0 directly downward across the neck of the hook h, and when properly proportioned the loop Z cannot accidentally become detached from its hook h. The loop w may be of cloth and be strongly secured to the back portion of a ladys underwaist, and the hooks h should project from either side of the cloth loop or strap,as shown.
I claim as my invention- In a skirt-supporter, the combination of a plate 19, provided with hooks h, upon its ends and shoulders on, adjacent to the hooks, the plate, hooks and shoulders being, approximately, in the same plane, notches 0, located and shaped as described, and the loop-pieces Z, provided with the slot Z, and adapted to receive the hooks h, and to fit into the notches 0.
HENRY DAVIES.
