MAY L. LEE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HOOK AND EYE.
Application filed January 19, 1912.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
Serial No. 672,242.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, May L. LEE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hooks and Eyes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in hooks and eyes for garments or clothing, and has for its object the production of a hook and eye which will be so constructed as to be adapted to be securely fastened to the fabric of the garment and which will be of improved construction and etlicient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
lVith these objects in view, my invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which the figure there shown is a perspective view of a. hook and eye embodying my invcntion.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises a hook member which is formed of a single piece of wire. This wire is formed into attaching loops or eyes 1 which are spaced apart to a considerable extent, as shown, for attachment to the fabric of the garment upon which it is desired to fasten the hook. 1r0 j ecting from the loops 1 are the sides 2 of the base portion of the bill 3, said sides 2 converging, as shown, so as to form the upper or engaging portion of the bill of a more dosirable and practical width. Also projecting from the loops 1 inwardly of the sides 2 of the base of bill 3 are the sides l of a tongue 5. Formed at the forward extremity of one of the sides 4 is an attaching loop 6 through the medium of which the forward end portion of the hook may be securely fastened in position. Formed in the sides 4: intermediate the extremities thereof are upwardly extending humps 7 which lie directly beneath the respective side portions 3 of the bill, to cooperate with the same to prevent accidental disengagement of the hook from the eye with which the same is engaged.
The eye, which is used in COIlJtIllCtlOn with the hook above described, is formed of an upwardly arched portion 8 which is adapted, when the eye is secured to the fabric, to project upwardly from the latter for ready ongagement by the bill 3 of the hook. Said arched portion 8 is formed at its extremities with inwardly extending engaging loops 9 positioned in a plane substantially perpendicular to the plane of said portion 8, said loops affording means whereby said eye may be securely fastened in position. By positioning said loops 9 as shown and mentioned, the same will be partially hidden or obscured, when attached, since the portion 8 will be positioned thereove' as well as the engaging portion of the hook.
A hook and eye fastening of the construction set forth is of high elliciency. The provision in the hook of a base portion having angularly disposed sides is of special advantage since through this construction a broad base is afforded, so that, when the hook is attached, the fabric will not be distorted and drawn such as is the case where a hook is used having a narrow base. Also, the provision of an additional loop (3 at the front end of the hook serves to maintain the position of the fabric to which the hook is attached, preventing folding or wrinkling longitudinally of the edge of the fabric to which the hook is attached. Moreover, the fastening is of simple and economical construction, hence may be manufactured at a low cost.
lVhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for ca rying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A hook consisting of a single continuous section of wire bent upon itself and having the bent portion re-bent to form a base and a bill, said bill arranged at an angle to the base and formed of two substantially parallel spaced portions, the terminals of said wire being rc-bent forming securing loops at the end of the base aforesaid, and curved 'bill, one end of said Wire being looped t0 upwardly to form coincident humps diname to this specification in the presence of rectly beneath the respective portions of the two subscribing Witnesses.
form a. secondary securing loop at the lower end of the bill and the other end. terminating adjacent thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed my Witnesses:
JOSHUA R. H. Po'rrs, HELEN F. LILLIs. r l
