Be it known that we, HENRY WILLIAM GREnMELs and GEORGE SOMERVILLE, citizens of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket Books or Cases, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to pocket books or cases 5 and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be folded into a small compass and which is primarily designed for carrying money in the form of bills, but which may also be employed for carrying papers of any kind or class 5 and with this and other objects in view the invention consists of the pocket book or case constructed as hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is an inside plan view of our improved pocket book or case extended or unrolled; Fig. 2, a longitudinal Ysection on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a View similar to Fig. 1, showing the pocket book or case folded up; Fig. 4, a section on the lined et of Fig. 1; Fig. 5, a partial View, similar to Fig. 1, of a modified form of construction; Fig. 6, an end view thereof, and Fig. 7 a partial section on the line 7 7 of Fig. 5.

In the drawings forming part of this specillcation the separate parts of our improvements are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of our invention we provide a pocket book or case of the class described comprising a frame composed of two parallel side bars 10 and 10, connected at their opposite ends by oblong' plates 1l, having segmental ends and with which are connected outside end plates 12 of similar form and slightly larger in longitudinal and transverse section, and between the plates 11 and 12, at each end, is a chamber 13, open at one side and preferably formed by a fiange Maformed in the plate 12 and extending between the points 15 and 1G in Fig. i, the top portion in said figure between said points being open, and pivoted in each of said chambers is an arm 17, the outer or free ends of which are connected by a longitudinal bar 18.

The arms 17 are pivoted in the chambers 13, as shown at 19, and said arms are provided with heads through which the pivotpins 19 pass, said heads being flat on two sides, and in each of the chambers 13 is secured a spring 20.

The springs 20 bear on the heads of the arms 17 and hold them either in an open or closed position, the open position being shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4 and the closed position in full lines, and when said arms are in the closed position they lill up the open space in the flange 14 between the points 15 and 1G, and each of the arms 17 is preferably provided in the back thereof with a notch or recess 21, which receives the end of the flange 14E when said arms are in the open position, as shown in said ligure.

The arms 17 and the bar 18, by which the free ends of said arms are connected, together with the springs 20, constitute a clamp for holding the bills or other articles in the pocket book or case, and secured to theframe between the outer end plates 12 is a sheet 22 of leather or other suitable flexible material, which is adapted to be wrapped around said frame, as shown in Fig. 3.

In securing the sheet 22 of leather or other flexible material to the frame it is wrapped around the side bars 10 and 10a and around the flanges 14, by which the chambers 13 are formed between the plates 1l and 12, and when the said sheet of iiexible material is wrapped around said frame so as to close the pocket book or case, as shown in Fig. 3, the entire frame is concealed, except the outer end plates 12.

The free end of the flexible strip 22 is provided with a strap 23, which is connected therewith by an eyelet 24, provided at one end with a spring-head 25, and the strap 23 is provided at its free end with an eyelet 26, and said strap is wrapped around the pocket book or case, as shown in Fig. 3, and the eyelet 2G connected with the spring-head 25 of the eyelet 24E, and the parts 25 and 26 are similar to ICO an ordinary glove-fastener and form a secure fastener for the pocket book or case.

The bar 18 of the spring-operated clamp and the part 10 of the frame, in connection with which the bar 18 operates or on which said bar 18 operates when the clamp is closed, are substantially the same in cross-section as the bar 10 at the opposite side of the frame, this construction of the parts being best shown in Fig. 2, and in Figs. 1 and 2 we have shown at 27 a number of bills .inserted between the side bar 10 of the frame and the bar 18. In order to do this, the clamp is thrown backwardly, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and the bills placed in position, after which the clamp is thrown forward, as shown in full lines in said figure. Any desired number of bills may be thus placed in the pocket-book, and the leather may be rolled up, as shown in Fig. 3, and conveniently carried in a pocket.

In Figs. 5 to 7 we have shown a modification in which the end plates at each end of the frame are of the same size in longitudinal and transverse section and are designated by the reference-numerals 28 and 28a, and between said end plates at each end is a chamber 29. In this form of construction a flange 30 is formed on the bottom portion of one of said plates at each end of the frame and closes the bottom and front portions of the chamber 29, and arms 31 are pivoted in the rear ends of said chambers and provided with segmental heads 32, which close said chambers at said ends, and the free ends of the arms 31 are connected by a cross-bar 33, similar to the bar 18` in Fig. 2, and in each of the chambers 29 is secured a spring 34, which serves to hold the arms 31 both in an open and closed position. In this form of construction the plates 28 and 28a at each end of the frame are provided in the upper corners thereof, opposite the pivotal supports of the arms 31, with notches or recesses 35, which receive a head formed on the free ends of said arms, and one of said heads is provided with a downwardly-directed lug or projection 36, which is milled on its outer surface and which serves as means for raising the clamp consisting of the bar 33 and the arms 31. In this form of construction horizontal side bars 37 and 38, similar to thebars 10 and 10a, (shown in Fig. 2,) are also employed, and the bar 38 is set inside the flange 30, as shown in Fig. 7. In the form of construction shown in Figs. 5 and 7 the flexible strip or sheet 22 is not shown, these figures being designed to show a modification of the ends of the frame and of the clamp; but it will be understood that in practice the flexible sheet or strip 22 is connected with the frame and secured to the bars 37 and 38 in the same manner as shown in Fig. 2.

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A pocket-book, comprising an oblong frame, an oblong spring-operated clamp having end arms pivoted in chambers in the ends of said frame, and a iieXible strip secured to said frame and adapted to be wound thereon over said clamp, substantially as shown and described.

2. A pocket-book consisting of an oblong frame, comprising parallel side bars and end portions, said end portions being provided with chambers open at one side, a spring-operated clamp having arms pivoted in said chambers, and a bar operating in connection with one of the side bars of the frame to hold bills or other articles, and a iiexible cover secured to the frame between the end portions and adapted to be wound around said frame and said clamp, substantially as shown and described.

3. A pocket-book, provided with end portions having chambers open at one side, a

clamp comprising a bar having arms pivoted in said chambers and spring-operated, and a iieXible cover or strip secured to the frame between the end portions and adapted to be wound around the same and around said clamp, substantially as shown and described.

4. A pocket-book, comprising a frame composed of parallel side bars, and end portions having chambers open at one side, a clamp comprising a horizontal bar provided with l arms pivoted in said chambers,springs mounted in said chambers for operating said clamp, and a iiexible cover or strip secured to the frame between the end portions and adapted to be rolled thereon and to inclose said clamp, substantially as shown and described.

5. A pocket-book consisting of an oblong frame, comprising parallel side bars, and end portions consisting of inner and outer plates, the outer plates being larger than the inner plates, said end portions being provided between said plates with chambers open at one side, and a clamp provided with arms pivoted in said chambers, and a bar adapted to operate in connection with one of the side bars of the frame, and a flexible cover or strip secured to the frame between the end portions and adapted to be wound on said frame and around said clamp, substantially as shown and described.
