PATENT ROYAL P. FARIES, or WICHITA, KANsAs.
CHECKRElN-HOOK..
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 641,284, dated January 16, 1900.
Application led May 10, 1898.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it `known that I, ROYAL P. FARIES, a citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at Wichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checkrein- Hooks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the acoompanying drawings and the figures of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification.
lVIy invention relates to an improvement in checkrein-hooks; and it is the object thereof to provide simple and efficient means for locking the checkrein'in place.
To this end the invention comprises a spring secured to the base of the hook having the free end thereof completely bent around until the edge of the same contacts with the fixed part thereof, whereby a loop is formed, the upper side of which normally rests in contact with the end of the hook.
The invention also includes the details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of the complete device; Figs. 2 and 3, detail views of the spring. Fig. 4 is a detail of the bolt for securing the spring, and Figs. 5 and 6 show detail views of a modified form of spring.
The hook 1, which is secured to the saddle Serial No, 680,282. (No model.)
2, is of the usual form. To this saddle, which forms the base of the hook, I secure one end 3 5 I'of a spring, which acts, in conjunction with the end of the hook, to retain the reins within said hook. The free end of the spring is bent around until the extreme end thereof comes in contact with the xed portion of the spring, thereby forming an elongated closed loop, the upper side 6 of which is normally in contact with the end of the hook and the lower side 5 thereof curves up from the saddle 2. The spring is held against lateral movement by forming in the xed end a square opening 8, through which the binding-bolt, having a square portion 9, closely fitting said opening, extends.
To insert the reins, the loop is compressed, the end '7 sliding along to permit this movement, the side 5 also being pressed against the base 2.
I claim as my iuvention'n g The combination with a checkrein-hook, of 55 a spring Xed at one end to the base of said hook having its free end bent around to form a complete loop with the eXtreme end of said free portion in contact with the fixed portion and the upper side of said loop normally in 6o engagement with the end of said hook.-
ROYAL P. FARIES.
