Description

Quite tetra stra t ffirs JAMES W. SUIDTER, OF SHARON, WISCONSIN.
Letters Patent No. 63,764, dated April 9, 1867.
IMPRO EMENT IN PORTABLE FENCE.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES W. SNIDTER, of Sharon, in the county of Walworth, and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Portable Fences and I do hereby declare thatt'he following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation; and
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
The same letters are employed in both figures in the indication of identical parts.
A A are the panels, formed of parallel horizontal boards, nailed to vertical strips, which answer the purpose of ordinary posts in forming the panels, the horizontal boards projecting beyond the vertical strips and overlapping when the panels are joined in putting up the fence. The lower edges of the upper boards and the upper edges of the next tier below them are chamfered to form edges at A, the bevelled faces inclining to correspond with the inclination of the cross-braces B. B Bare the cross-braces, which pass between the upper board and the one immediately below it. These cross-braces are supported upon the foot-pieces C C, which are suitable sticks of timber crossing one another, as shown in the drawing, and having holes through them at 0, through which the cross-braces are passed, thus affording a rigid support for the fence. One of the boards forming the fence also rests upon the crossed foot-pieces at their point of intersection. The distance between the holes 0 0" should be so regulated that when the cross-braces B B are passed through the fence they should be slightly bent so that by their tension they shall give greater stability to the panels. The foot-pieces'C C may be fastened to the earth by pins, D D, passing through holes near their lower end. These pins may be inclined, as shown, or driven vertically, as preferred. The panels in setting the fence are adjustable to the inequalities of the surface of the ground by bending them up or down at the point ofjunction It is desirable that greater length of lap should be afforded where the fence is to be placed on very uneven ground than isnecessary 0n.level ground.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable fence, constructed with panels A, cross-braces B, and foot-pieces (I, with or without the pin D, said parts being respectively constructed and the whole combined substantially as'set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES W. SUIDTER.
