Be it known that I, C. F. GILLETTE, of Sparta, in the county of Monroe, and in the Stateof Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed Bottoms. and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, 'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making apart of this specication. l

My invention relates to that class ot' bedsteads upon which .cords are used to support the mattress.

In the annexed drawings, A represents the usual form of 'bedsteat Upon the two sides and end rails of the bedstead I place a series of pulleys in a horizontal position, or rollers', b, for. the bed-cord to pass around. These pulleys readily turn in their places, and are set sutlciently apart to suit the cord or rope, a. B B represent slats which shield Vthe pulleys and the cord in their proper places. At the foot of the bedstead, to one of the posts, is a shaft which passes through and beyond the said post, as shown in fig. 1. This shaft has a small ratchet,f, and dog, e, tc hold itas desired. One end ofthe bed-cord I attach to the shaft, and pass it around the several pulleys in the usual way, securely fastening the other end to a pin, 11;, in one of the rails. I) represents a key which Ets over the end of the shaft @,for the purpose of winding the cord around the shaft, thereby tightening or loosening the said vcord as required.

In a bed bottom having the cord passing around a series of pulleys, b b, I claim the arrangement of the slats B B, .placed above the pulleys, when in combination with the shaft C, as specified.
