BROOM HOLDER O RACK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,883, dated October 17, 1899.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT L. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ittabena, in the county of Leflore and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Commercial Broom Holders or Racks, of which the followingis a specification.

My invention is a commercial broom-rack; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view except as to the central rod. Fig. 3 is a detail view. The dotted lines show the position of the arms when turned up.

My invention is described as follows:

1 is a bracket having screw-holes 2, through which it may be secured to the ceiling, and a central perforation 3, in which a central rod 4 is secured. This rod may be threaded into the bracket 1 or otherwise secured therein. This rod 4 is suspended from the bracket, and at its lower end there is secured to it an armholder 5. This arm holder has a central perforation 6, (see Fig. 2,) through which the lower end of the arm is inserted. This arm-holder has secured to its upper face two right-angle brackets 7, the upright parts conforming to the periphery of the rod 4, and the said rod is secured between them by means of thumb-screws 8. This arm-holder 5 is provided with four slotted extensions 9. The outer or end walls 10 of each extension slope inwardly from the top downward, and the upper faces of these extensions are each provided with depressions 11. In these extensions are secured arms 12. These arms consist of a piece of wood or other material having secured on their top faces each a rod 13. The inner ends of these arms are sloped downward from the top and backward and exactly coincide with the walls 10 when these arms are down or in a horizontal position. These arms are bifurcated or have each a slot running from their outer ends back to the ends of the extensions 9. These slots are wider at the top than at the bottom, and are thus accommodated to the shape of the brooms at the point where they rest in said slots. The brooms may rest in said slots either sidewise or edgewise, as shown in Fig. 2.

To put the arms 12 in place, they are brought to their places in a perpendicular position and are put into the slots their longer sides outward, and the ends of their rods 13 are let down into the recesses 11. Then the arms are turned down into a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1.

The arm-holder 5 is made adjustable on the rod 1 by means of the bracket '7 and thumbscrews 8 for the purpose of raising or elevating said arm-holder 5 and the brooms which it contains, so that the handles of the brooms may be out of the way. when the ceiling of the storerooni is low.

In the drawings I have shown only four ex tensions 9; but as many more extensions and arms may be used as desired. The drawings are made from a wooden model, but in manu facturing the device I prefer to make it of metal and make the parts much lighter than as shown, and they are ornamented to make them attractive.

As will be seen, the device may be taken to pieces and all of its parts neatly packed.

This device is of great benefit to merchants in displaying their brooms. A stock of brooms is always in the Way and very hard to display to advantage. My device, in my opinion, settles the problem.

Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A mercantile broom-holder, consisting of a bracket 1, having screw-holes 2, and a central perforation 3; a pendent rod 4, its upper end secured in the perforation 3; an arm-holder 5, having a central perforation 6, brackets 7, secured on its upper face, their vertical ends grasping the lower end of the rod 4 thumb-screws 8, securing said brackets to the rod, and bifurcated arms 12, hinged into said arnrholder 5, substantially as shown and described and for the purposes set forth.
