I" NYUNmjED STATESv PATENT OFFICE.-
WILLIAM E. SELL, OF CANTON, OH-O, ASSIGOR TO THE GILLIAMS MANU; FACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
BIT.
To @ZZ Ywiwi/rz, it may concer/'M n Be it known that I, WVILLIAM E. SELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton,
' in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented acertain new and usefullmprovef ment in Bits, of which the following is a full,
- a horses mouth.
*To this end the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out definitely in the claim.
' In the drawings, Figure l isa plan view of a bit embodyingmy invention, the bit-body being made of Aone piece. Fig. 2' is a similar View, partly in section, of a bit-embodying my invention wherein the bitebody is made of two pieces connected together in the usual Way. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partlyin section, of a rubber protector; and Fig. 4 is a view of .the same, looking in thedirection of the arrow inFig. 3.
Y Referring to the parts by-letters, A repre-l sents a bit-bar which may be made of one piece, asin Fig. l, or two pieces fastened to-` gether by interlocking eyes a, as shown in Fig. 2, both constructions being well known in "this art.`
B represents rings which are mounted in eyes a' on the outer ends of the bit-bar and serve as means' for attaching the reins.
C represents a rubber protector, which consistsof a tub'ular'body c and plano-convex disks c', which are integral with the body and normally liev substantially at right angles thereto. These protectors are preferably made of what is known as sponge-rubber. The outer face of each disk is plane, while the inner side is convex, and the disk is substantially circular in form. The tubular body projects at right angles from the conveX side of the fdisk and from a point at or very close to the marginal edge thereof. The tubular body part and the disk near its edge are split, Vwhereby the body may be spread open, so as to permit of the insertion of the sPncrFI'onTIoN' forming peri; of Lettere Peten@ No. 634,769, tieten october 1o, 189e."
I Applicafgn filed .Tune 20, 1899. Serial No. 7215229. (No model.) A
bit-bar. When the bit-bar has been inserted in the body part c ofthe protector, the bar is embraced by said body part, and the disks lie just inside of the rein-rings and substantially at right angles to the bit-bar.V The rubber disks c are covered on both sides by leather pieces D 1D', the marginal 'edges of which are sewed together. The inner piece has a hole near its margin, through which the bit-bar passes. The body part c is also covered by a leather envelop, the outer ends of which are made fast tothe inner leather cover D of the disks. f n Y When the bit-barfis made of one piece, the body part of the protector is made, approxi-u mately, as long as the bit-bar, and the disks are formed I on the opposite ends thereof. Whemhcwever, the 'bit-bar'is made of two pieces, the body part of the'protecting-piece is made of two pieces, and each has a disk on its outer'end. The leather envelop for the body lof the protecting-piece extends only slightly beyond the inner ends of the body pieces of therubberl protector, so that it does not interfere with the relative movement of the tw'o parts of the bitbar.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
#The combination of a bit-bar having eyes at its outer ends and rein-rings in said eyes, with a protector C made of sponge-rubber and consisting of plano-convex disks, and a tubuf lar body which is integral with the disks and projects substantially at right angles to the disks from the convex sides thereof` and from lpoints close to their marginal edges, a leather
