JUMPING-ROPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent N0. 633,590, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed December 2,1397. Serial No. 660,495. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK B. HINKSON and WILLIAM I. CRAWFORD, citizens of the United States, residing at New Castle, in the county of Lawrence and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Jumping-Rope, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to jumping-ropes for the use of children, and has for its object to furnish a device of this class which shall be simple, cheap, strong, and durable.
With this object in View our invention consists in a jumping-rope comprising two coils of wire, one within the other, having suitable end handles attached thereto.
Our invention further consists in a jumping-rope comprising two coils of wire, one inclosed within the other, the coils being twisted in opposite directions and suitable handles secured at each end.
Our invention further consists in a jumping-rope comprising perforated handles, a coil of wire, the ends of which are inserted in said handles, and a barbed bolt secured in the ends of the coils, which hold them in the openings in the handles and permit them to swivel or turn therein.
Our invention further consists in a jumping-rope comprising perforated handles, two coils of wire, one within the other, the ends of which are inserted in the perforations in the handles, while a barbed bolt or pin in the open ends of the double coils holds them in the handles, while permitting them to swivel in the perforations thereof.
Our invention further consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and afterward specifically pointed out inthe appended claims.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which our invention most nearly appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective View of a j umping-rope constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view,
on an enlarged scale, of a section of the body of the j umping-rope. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional View of the same. Fig. at is a detail sectional view through one of the handles and one end of the body secured therein. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the barbed securing bolt or pin. Fig. 6 is a detail view illustrating a barbed bolt in the ends of the coils detached from the handle.
Like letters of reference mark the same parts wherever they occur in the different figures of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by letters, A indicates the main body of our improved jumping-rope, which consists of an outer coil B and an inner coil C, of Wire, either fiat or round, the former preferred. The coils B and C are turned in opposite directions, one being right-handed and the other left-handed, it being immaterial whether the right-hand or left-hand one is inside or outside.
D D are handles of any ordinary shape to be attached to the ends of the body A. These handles are centrally perforated, the bore E therein being of two diameters, joined by a shoulder F about midway of the length of the handle.
G is a bolt or pin provided with a head H and barbs I.
J is a plug to close the outer end of the bore E of the handle.
To secure the ends of the bodyA in the handles, the bolt G is forced into the end of the interior coil 0. As the bolt G is forced into the coil the backward-pointed barbs I will slip between the coiled wires B and O, which drop behind the barbs, and after the insertion of the bolt the ends of the barbs are bent down upon the outside of these wire coils flush with the outer surface thereof.
In assembling the parts a bolt is secured in one end of the coils, the other end passed through one handle from the outer side and through the other handle from the inner side, and a bolt then secured in the projecting end. WVhen the coils are in position in the handle, the contact of the head H of the bolt with the shoulder F will prevent them being slipped or drawn through the smaller section of the bore E, whereby the pulling out of the body A will be rendered impossible, and its ends will be thus secured in position in the handle and permitted to swivel therein. The plug J will now be inserted to give a better finish to the outer end of the handle and prevent any tampering with the bolt.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that we have provided an extremely simple and cheap construction of j umpingrope which will at the same time be extremely durable and efficient for the purpose for which it is intended, our means for securing the ends thereof in the handles being easy and sure.
As hereinbefore stated, the coils B and C may be made of round or fiat Wire, although we prefer the flat wire, and it is obvious that they may also be made of wire of any other crosssectional form, such as half fiat, elliptic, the.
While we have described efficient means for carrying out our invention, we do not wish to be understood as restricting ourselves to the exact details of construction shown and described, but hold that any slight changes or variations such as might suggest themselves to the ordinary mechanic would properly fall within the limit and scope of our in- Vention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a jumping-rope, the combination with perforated handles, of a body made of coiled Wire, each end of which is inserted in the perforations of said handles, and a barbed bolt secured in each end of the coil to prevent it from being drawn through said perforations, substantially as described. 7
2. The combination with perforated handles, of a body consisting of two coils of wire, one inclosed within the other, the ends of said body being inserted in the perforations of said handles, and barbed bolts being secured in each end of the coils to retain them in said perforations, substantially as described. 7
3. The herein-described jumping-rope,comprising handles provided with perforations of two different diameters joining each other at shoulders at about the mid-length of the handles, the body consisting of coiled wire, the ends of which are inserted in the smaller sections of the perforations of the handles, beyond the shoulders in said perforations, and the barbed and headed bolts secured in the ends of the coil of the body with their heads in position to contact with the central shoulders in said perforations, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the perforated handles, of a body consisting of an inner and outer coil of wire, one of said coils being righthanded and the other left-handed, the ends of said body being inserted in perforations in the handles, of barbed bolts secured in each end of the coils and provided at one end with suitable heads to retain them in said perforations and a plug or stopper secured in the free end of said perforations to limit the slidable movement of the handles on the coils, substantially as described.
5. In a jumping-rope, the combination with the handles, of a rope made of wire, aheaded bolt in said handle, and provided with rearwardly-projectin g stuck-up barbs to hold and retain the ends of said rope in the handles substantially as described.
