Description
(No Model.) I
F. H. PROSSER 86 S. F. DORR.
FIRE LIGHTER. I No. 602,871. Patented Apr. 26, 1898.
UNITED STATES PATENT @EEroE;
FRANK H. PROSSER AND STEPHEN F. DORR, OF ANTIGO, VVISGONSIN.
FIRE-LIGHTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,871, dated April 26,1898.
Application filed March 31, 1897. Serial No. 630,125. (No model) To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, FRANK H. Pnossnn and STEPHEN F. DORR, citizens of the United States, residing at Antigo, in the county of Langlade and State of W'isconsin, have invented a new and useful Fire-Lighter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in fire-lighters, and has for its object to provide a serviceable device of this character of a simple and inexpensive nature which shall be neat and attractive in appearance and of a strong and durable construction.
The invention consists in a tire-lighter comprising a casing provided with a forked handle and consists of a wire coil held between circular end plates or pieces having marginal flanges to take over the ends of the coil, a spacing-piece inside said coil to hold said end plates spaced apart, and a filling of mineral wool inside said body, the forks of the handle being loosely connected at the central portions of said end plates at opposite faces of the casing.
The invention also contemplates certain novel features of the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts of the improved fire-lighter whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is made simpler, cheaper, and otherwise better adapted and more convenient for use, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will'be carefully defined in the claim.
In order that ourimprovements may be the better understood, we have shown in the accompanying drawings a fire lighter constructed in accordance with our invention, in which drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a fire-lighter constructed according to our invention, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view taken axially through the casing of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken transversely through the casing of the fire-lighter in the plane indicated by the line a ain Fig. 2.
As shown in the drawings, 1 indicates the handle of the device, formed, as herein shown, of a single piece of wire having a twisted central portion 2 and provided at one extremity with a loop or eye 3, formed in it, by
means of which the device may be conveniently suspended from' a nail or hook, while at the opposite end of the handle the end portions 4 of the wire of which the handle is formed are separated or bent in opposite directions to form forks between which the casing of the lighter is loosely held.
The body portion of the casing is formed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, of a central portion 5, consisting of a coil of wire forming a chamber to receive a packing or filling of mineral wood or similar substance, as shown at 6, the opposite open ends of said coilbeing closed by means of end plates 7, of circular form, having marginal flanges 8 formed upon them and projecting over outside of the end portions of the coil 5.
To hold the end plates 7 spaced apart from each other, we arrange within the hollow or chamber of the casing, which is, as shown in Fig. 2,0f circular form, an axial spacing block or piece 9, formed of a section of metal tubing, through which passes a bolt or pin 10, the ends of which extend out through the central portions of the end plates 7 of the easing and are engaged with eyes 11, formed in the forked end portions 4 of the handle of the improved fire-lighter. The extremities of the pin or bolt 10 are provided with enlargements or heads 12, which may be formed in any preferred manner.
From the above description it will be seen that the improved fire-lighter is of an extremely simple and inexpensive nature and is especially well adapted for the purposes for which it is designed, since it is of a form adapted for convenient use in the household and is constructed in such a manner as to be especially strong and durable, and it will also be obvious from the above description that the invention is capable of some modification without material departure from its principles and spirit, and for this reason we do not wish to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise form and arrangement of the various parts herein set forth,
Having thus described our invention, we claim A fire-lighter comprising a coil of wire, metal plates closing the ends of the coil, a fastening device connecting the plates and holding the same and the coil together, a handle provided with a forked endstraddling,
the coil and Connected to theterminals of the fastening device, a sleeve arranged on the substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that we'elaimthe foregoing as our ownwe have hereto-affixed our signa- I0 tures in presence of two witnesses.
, FRANK 'H. PROSSER.
STEPHEN F. DORE.
