ADJUSTABLE CAR-STRAP.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY ll/IURRAY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Adjustable Car-Strap, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of car-straps which are suspended from the upper portions of passenger-cars, by the use of which standing passengers are enabled to secure aid in supporting themselves comfortably. Ordinarily these straps are of fixed length, in consequence of which children and others of small stature find it impossible or inconvenient to use the straps. The object of my invention is to obviate these ditficulties by providing a strap adjustable in length to suit persons of various statures. I attain these objects by theinvention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the invention,
showing the same partially extended and sus pended from a rod. Fig. 2 is an edge view showing the same partially extended and suspended from a rod and with the hooks of the movable member disengaged from the lugs or shoulders of the fixed member; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my invention, showing hooks engaged with a pair of lugs or shoulders.

Car-straps for the use of passengers are usually supported from a rod A, extending horizontally through the car near its ceiling. B is the loop of the strap through which said rod passes, said loop being riveted at f or otherwise suitably fastened to O, the fixed member of my invention, extending oppositely from two of the sides of which are a convenient number of pairs of-lugs or shoulders at a, the said member 0 having in its lower portion an opening I) of sufficient dimensions to permit the movable memberD to move freely through it, but not entirely out of it, the portion of 0 containing said opening I) being curved or bent outwardly toward D sufliciently to permit the free movement thereof in such direction as will permit the hooks c c to engage with a pair of lugs or shoulders a a or to disengage from them. 0 c are hooks placed at the upper part of two of the sides of D and so formed and placed as to engage with the lugs or shoulders at a and to support the member D when so engaged and to prevent said member from passing entirely through the opening I), and E is a loop riveted at g or otherwise suitably fastened to the lower end of the member D, said loop being large enough to prevent the member D from passing entirely through the opening b, and is for the convenience of the user of the said invention.
The strap being in position on the rod or other support may be shortened so that the hooks c c engage with and rest on the uppermost pair of lugs or shoulders a a near the top of member 0, or may be lengthened so that said hooks engage with and rest on the lowermost pair of logs or shoulders near the lower portion of member C, or the said hooks may engage with and rest on any pair of lugs or shoulders between the lowermost and the uppermost.
The said strap may be made of wood, metal, or other material sufficiently strong for the purpose and stiff enough to maintain the shape originally imparted to it, and for the loop E of my invention may be substituted such device as a knob or handle, while the said strap may be so'supported that the movable member shall become the fixed member and the fixed the movable member.
I do not confine myself to the exact constrnct-ion shown, as other means may be used that employ the principles of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An adjustable car-strap, adapted to be supported from a rod or other support, and which comprises two members, placed substantially parallel, the fixed member having a series of pairs of lugs or shoulders placed oppositely on two of the sides of said member to engage with a pair of hooks, at the upper part of two of the sides of the free member, the lower portion of the fixed member being curved or bent outwardly toward the free member and containing an opening through which the free member moves the full length between its hooks and a loop or other handle d ber, aloop orotherhandle being, fastened to the lowerend of the movable member, sub
