To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL O. AKERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Cork Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in cork-fasteners for securing corks in bottles, and more particularly to that class of fasteners in which a band of sheet metal is passed around the neck of the bottle and an integral strap is passed over the cork and its free end secured under the band; and the object is to improve the construction and provide a simple, inexpensive, and effective device for this purpose.
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several elements of the device, as. will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved cork-fastener as it appears in operation. Fig. 2 is a similar View of the device applied to the neck of the bottle and before the cork is secured. Fig. 3 is a similar View of the device as it appears ready to attach to the bottle. Fig. t represents the blank as it appears when punched out. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the device as it would appear attached to the bottle.
This fastener oreork-retainer is preferably punched or cut from sheet metal, so as to form the broad band A and the integral narrow strap B, joined at right angles to each other, as shown in Fig. 4. The narrower strap B is then turned back on itself to form the loop I). (Shown in Fig. 3.) The band A is passed horizontally around the neck of the bottle below the flangeazand its free end 0 passed through the loop I) and turned outwardly and backwardly on itself, as shown in Fig. 2, thus firmly securing the device to the neck of the bottle. The cork is then inserted and the strap B passed across the top of the cork and then downwardly on the op posite side of the cork and neck and its free end slipped under the band and then turned sharply upward outside of the band to securely retain the cork in place, as shown in Fig. l. l
I am aware that analogous fasteners have been used; but they had slots formed in the band and strap at predetermined intervals, which necessitated the employment of expensive dies in their manufacture, and, moreover, this construction required more metal at these points to provide for the slots, and this reinforcing at the slots produced an irregular-shaped band, which caused a very ap preciable loss or waste in punching the fasteners from the sheet.
The accompanying drawings show my invention in the best form now known to me; but many changes in the details might be made within the skill of a good mechanic without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claim at the end of this specification.

As an improved article of manufacture, a cork-fastener, comprising a band provided at one end with a right-angular integral strap which is bent down upon the band at its place of union therewith so as to form a loop, said band being adapted to encompass the neck of the bottle and have its free end secured in said loop and the free end of the strap passed over the cork and secured under said band, substantially as shown and described.
