Description

Patented Sept. 5, I899. G. W. GOLDEN.

(Na Model.)
UNrrED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE WV. GOLDEN, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 632,309, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed December 21,1898. Serial No- 699,887. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. GOLDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Offset Hinges, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to hinges especially designed for use as pivots or centers of swinging window-sash.
It is common in the construction of swinging windows to provide the sash and frame with reverse rabbets-that is, with a projecting portion or stop on the sash upon one side of the pivotal point or center adapted to engage with the corresponding rabbet in the frame, while upon the opposite side of the center the sash is rabbeted and a stop is formed on the frame. With such constructions the parting-line between the sash and frame is .in different planes upon opposite sides of the centers or pivots. It is the object of my invention to obtain a hinge for pivotally uniting said sash to the frame which will conform to this ofiset parting-line, so as to permit the free turning of the frame and which also covers the transverse parting, as at the center of the sash.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar construction of an offset hinge, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of portions of a window sash and frame together with my improved hinge uniting the same, shown detached therefrom. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the hinge in position and of slightly-modified construction. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the detached parts of the hinge shown in Fig. 2.
A is the hinge, which in the construction shown in Fig. 1 comprises two complementary and substantially L-shaped members B and B. These members are provided with the knuckles a a and a a, respectively, which when the members are placed together are adapted to intermesh and to be pivotally united by the pin C. When thus secured together, the central knuckles a a will cover the parting-line between the lateral extensions of the two members, and the parting-line between said members transverse to the pivot will be offset on opposite sides of said pivots, as shown in b and Z1. My hinge thus constructed is adapted for use in uniting the reverse-rabbet Window sash and frame, such as D and E, Fig. 1, and it will be observed that when said hinge is secured in position the partingline between the two members thereof will correspond to the offset parting-line between the sash" and frame, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 1.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I show a slightly-modified construction in Which the members B and B are each formedin two sections a and d, having intermeshing knuckles and extending, respectively,on opposite sides of said knuckles.
With both constructions the hinge may be readily secured to the sash and frame by placing the latter in proper relation and then placing a hinge in position thereon, so as to register its parting-line with that between the sash and frame members and then securing the hinge by screws or in any other suitable manner. When thus secured, the sash will be free to swing to almosta reverse position, while at the same time the central knuckles Ct at will cover the lateral parting-line between the oppositely-extending stops on the sashframe.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A hinge comprising two members having engaging knuckles pivotally secured together, said members being divided from each other by an offset line transverse to the pivot.
2. A hinge comprising the complementary, substantially L-shaped members B and B respectively, provided with inter-meshing knuckles a a and a a.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE w. GOLDEN.
