WAIST-BELT ATTACH M ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 631,594, dated August 22, 1899. Application filed May 31, 1899. derial No. 718,908. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CLEMENT L. STEPHEN- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing in New York city, county of New York, in the State of N ewYork, have invented a Waist-Belt Attachment, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined shirtwaist holders and skirt-supporters of that class in which a waist-belt is provided with hooks to hold the two garments together. An example of such a device is illustrated in my Patent No. 603,158, dated April 26, 1898.
The object of my invention is to construct a simple and inexpensive device of this character which will fold up into a small compass, will require no preparation of the shirtwaist or skirt, will securely hold the two garments in proper relation to each other, will leave the waist-line smooth, and be convenient and comfortable to the wearer.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is perspective view of a waist-belt provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one of my improved attachments. Fig. 3 is a section through one of the plates and the belt, and Fig. 4 is a view of a modification.
One of the features of my invention consists in making the hook-carrying part or parts in the form of a plate or plates separate from the belt proper and provided with slots or other such means by which the plate or plates may be easily applied to textile leather or other such flexible belts.
Another feature of my invention consists in the manner of mounting the hooks in the plates.
While the hook-carrying part may be a single plate, I prefer to make it of three plates A A A Fig. 1. The hook part B is similar to that shown in my above-mentioned patent and consists of a U-shaped wire with sharpened points I) b bent up into the form of a pair of hooks. Two holes for the passage of these hooks are formed in the plate, so that when the U-shaped part lies up against one side of the plate the two sharpened points will project at an angle from the other side, as shown in Fig. 3. The plates are so applied or secured to the flexible belt 0 that the latter will lie outside the U-shaped part of the hook and hold the latter in the position shown in Fig. 3, with the sharp points projecting on the other side of the plate. When not so held by the belt 0, the hooks can swing to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, but cannot work entirely out.
The two outer ,of the three plates A A A are shown as with their sharpened pairs of hooks projecting outward from the belt and upward to support the band of the skirt. The middle plate has its sharpened hooks projecting inward of the belt and downward at the inner face of the belt to engage with and hold down the waist.
The hook-carrying plate or plates should be provided with slots a a, through which the belt will be laced. When three such plates are used, they need have no other mechanical connection with each other than through the belt itself, as illustrated in Fig. 1. In that event the plates will be all alike and each plate will have two vertical slots a, one near each edge, as shown in Fig. 2. If preferred, the plates may be hinged together, as at a, Fig. 4, and in that case but four slots at, instead of six, will suffice for the three plates.
Owing to the main part of the belt being of textile or other flexible material, the belt is not only convenient and comfortable to the wearer, but it can also be folded up into a very small space.
I claim as my invention- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for a waist-belt to be inserted between the waist and skirt, consisting of a plate provided with sharpened hooks adapted to project from both faces of the belt, those on one face projecting upward and those on the other face projecting downward, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, an attachment for a waist-belt to be inserted between the waist and skirt, consisting of asupporting-plate comprising a plurality of parts hinged together and having sharpened hooks on the diiferent parts adapted to project on both faces of the belt, those on one face projecting upward and those on the other face projecting downward, substantially as described.
