To ALL WHOM 1T MAY coNcEnNfi Be it known that I, ADAM l-I.l RENIE, oi` Binghamton, in the county of Broome, and State of New Yori-z havev invented a newV and improved Mode of Connecting 4and Fastening Bedsteads or similar'constructions together; and I do hereby declare that the following is 'a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 4making a part of this specification, in which-ffv Figure 1 is an inside view ofla connected corner section.
Figures 2 and 3 are disconnected sections, showing the oblique dowel pins and their corresponding holes in the posts. j i
v Figure 4 represents the guide-block or templet, which is depcndentlytconnected with the construction of my improvement'. y
Similar letters ot' reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure. i
The object of this invention is toy construct a bedstead which shall possess the qualities of stability, simplicity, and cheapness, with joints which shall be impervious lto insects, and dispensing with all Ametallic appliances, with .the exception of a single clasp at each joint;
To accomplish this, I insert in the end of the rail A. threeA or more dowel pins, I) b extending obliquely downwards from the face ofthe joint. Said pins are iitted to corresponding holes in the posts, so that an increase of Weight-upon the railincrea'ses the adhesion of the connection; For' the purpose of'increasing the lateral stifness of thejoints, I insert two ot' the dowel pins on a line in the end oi' the rail, and one'or lmore as far from the side of said line as consistent with ,the thickness of the material. The holes for the dowel pins are made by means-of a guide-block or templet, represented by fig. 4. The operation isA accomplished'vby placing it' in the proper position on the end of the rail, where it is secured fromvslipping by the steady-points P P P. The holes are then bored, those in the templet guiding the bit in the desired directionyitis then detached, andthe opposite side placed upont'hepost and the holes bored in the same manner. Iuorder to give still more security to the joints, I attach an eccentric clasp, D, whichworks on a pin in the post. By this means the joints are drawn more tightly together,`making it impossible for insects to enter. When the bedstead is to be'taken apart, the clasp can .be detached by simply unlocking and Aslipping 4it' oft from the pin. The rails are then detachedby raising them from their oblique bearings in the posts. i
I am aware that there are fastenings for bedsteacls which are asimilar in some respects to mine',l most of them having iron attachments,uwhile some are constructed of wood with tenonsof'the sume'material, the lower or bearing edge of which is cut on an angle with a corresponding mortise. All such arrangements are liable-to get out of order. Thejoints soon become loose,vas they arenot of suicient strength to endure the lateral strain to which they are more or less liable.l My improvement obviates all these diiicu'lties. The dow'el pins are sielected'ot` the best material, and so arranged as to givethe joints all the requisite stiffness, while-the eccentric clasp draws the postand rail so closely together that it resembles a solid substance. It is more'easily manufactured, more durable, and can be more economically and beneficially enjoyed by thepublic. I therefore disclaim all similer-devices and c'onne myself .to the novel features of my 'irriprovement What I claim, and desire ,to secure by Letters Patent, is v The mode of constructing, arranging, and combining oblique dowel piu joints with the eccentric clasp D,
ADAM H. RENNIE.
