Description

UNITEDV STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANZ s. ERIGes, or NEosI-Io, MISSOURI.
FELLY-TROUGH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,481, dated August 8, 1899. Application iiled June 13, 1898. Serial No. 683,324. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, FRANZ S. BRIGGS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Neosho, in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Trough for Boiling Fellies, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in troughs for boiling fellies.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of troughs for boiling fellics in oil and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and seamless trough adapted to be constructed of a single piece of .sheet metal and provided with a smooth bottom and sides r to prevent accumulation of hardened iand burned oil on the interior.
A further object of the invention is to avoid soldering the parts and to provide legs or rests for supplying a firm base to prevent the trough from tipping or spilling any of its contents While in use.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a trough constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in an upright position. Fig. 2 isa similar view, the trough being inverted. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view of one end of the trough. Fig. 4. is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all i the gures of the drawings.
1 designates atrough'constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and composed of vertical sides 2 and a curved bottom conforming to the configuration of the fellies to be boiled and extending upward from the lower edges of the sides at the center of the trough to the upper edges of the sides at the ends thereof. The trough is formed of an oblong blank, which is folded at equal distances from its side edges to provide the sides 2, and the intermediate portion between the sides is curved upward between the same to form the bottomthe superiluous metal at the lower edges of the sides providing depending flanges L1,-which serve as legs or rests and support the trough to prevent the same from tipping and spilling any of its contents Whilein use. The folded portions which form the flanges 4 are compressed to bring the two plies or members of each ange close together, and the ends 5 of the flanges are folded back on the exterior of the sides, thereby firmly securing the parts and preserving the shape of the trough.
, The upper edges of the trough may be provided with a seam to strengthen the device, or the said upper edges may be rolled into beads and supported by wires inserted in the beads in the usual manner.
The invention has the followin g ad vantages The trough, which has acurved bottom to conform to the configuration of the curve of a wheel, is constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and Without soldered or similar seams, so that there is no liability of it dropping to pieces when heated. It is especially adapted for boiling fellies in oil, as it presents smooth inner faces and prevents accumulation of hardened and burned oil on 'the interior. The fold or lap securely holds the trough in its proper shape and at the' same time provides depending flanges which form legs or rests and prevent the trough from tipping or spilling any of its contents While it is in use. The
arrangement and the manner of folding the parts permit the edges of the trough to be i stiened by a seam or a bead.
What I claim isl. A trough constructed of a single piece of sheet metal and comprising a curved bottomand sides, the metal being folded at the juncture of the sides'and bottom and forming depending flanges', substantially as described. l
2. A trough constructed of a single piece of sheet metal folded to form a curved bottomof a single thickness, and sides having danges depending below the bottom and composed of two thicknesses of sheet metal, substantially as and for the purposeV described.
3. A trough constructed iof a single piece of sheet metal folded longitudinally to form vertical sides, and having the intermediate IOO portion between the sides curved upward lto l Intestimony'that I claim the foregoing as form a bottom, the superfluous metal being my own Ihaveheretoaxed myignature in extended downward and forming continuathe presence of two witnesses.
t-ionsof the sides to provide depending anges l l FRANZ S. BRIGGS. or feet, the outer terminals of the fianges or Witnesses:
feet being folded back on the exterior of the CAROLINE GEYER,
sides, substantially as described. JOHN B. MURRAY.
