Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t 'may concern:

Be it known that I, SIGMUND F REY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented a new and useful Canteen, of which the following 1s a specification.

This invention relates to containers for liquids, and an object of the invention is to make provision for preventing rolling of the canteen. v

Another object is to provide a canteen with feet so constructed as to insure against their 'becoming separated from the body of the canteen.

Another object is to so construct the canteen as to provide a supplemental bottom or reinforcing` member in combination with supporting feet.

Other objects and advantages will appear` hereinafter.

The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.

Figure l is a side elevation of a canteen made in accordance with the invention.

Fig. 2 is an enlarged elevation in vertical midsection of the lower portion of the canteen shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmental elevation in vertical midsection of a modified form of the invention.

Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation on line indicated by w4-4, Fig. 2.

Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are views, corresponding to Figs. l, 3 and 4 respectively, of a modified form of the invention.

The body of the canteen comprises a rim or peripheral wall 1 and side walls 2, 3, the side walls being fastened or joined to tbe rim wall by any suitable means. In the drawings the joining together of the walls is by the double seams 4 as clearly shown in Fig. 4. These double seams are extensively employed in the manufacture of cans and the like and therefore need not be further described herein.

Applied to a portion of the rim 1 is a strip that may form inpart a supplemental bottom or reinforcing member 5 which may have its longitudinal edges doubled at 6, over as in Figs. 2 and 4 or under as in Fig. 3. Thus in Figs. 2 and 4 a space ais formed between the member 5 and the rim 1, whereas in Fig. 3 the member 5 is in contact with the rim from side to side.

T he member 5 is bent outward away from the rim and back toward the rim to form tubular feet 7 and said feet may be formed by bending the member 5 in circles short distances from the ends of the member 5. The tubular feet may be of any suitable form of hollow construction.

In the form of the invention in Fig. 2 the ends of the member 5 conform to the rim of the canteen as at 8, and in the form of the invention in Fig. 3 the ends of the member 5 are disposed inside of the circular feet as at 9, so as to form reinforcements for said feet and so as to neatly terminate the member 5. The member 5 is firmly fastened to the rim 1 by soldering or the like in the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the longitudinal edges of the supplemental bottom are bent at 10 over the Hange formed by the seam 4, and whereas solder is relied upon in the other forms of the invention to fasten the member 5 in place in this modified form the bent over portion l0 is suficient to secure the member 5 firmly in place.

From the foregoing the construction of the canteen will be clear and it is seen that the feet may be easily formed and fastened securely in place and that by reason of the feet being formed from portions of the member 5 said member functions to support the body of the canteen and also to reinforce the rim at the bottom portion of said rim where reinforcement is desirable.

I claim:

l. The combination withthe rim of a canteen, of a supplemental bottom fastened to said rim, said bottom having portions thereof bent outward from the rim to form tubular feet, the end portions of said su plemental bottom being disposed inside of the tubular feet to reinforce said feet.

2. A canteen having a rim wall and having iianges at the edges of said rim wall, a supplemental bottom having its longitudinal edges bent over the iianges to retain said bottom, and feet projecting from said supplemental bottom.

3. A canteen having a rim wall and having flanges at the edges of said rim wall, and

a supplemental bottom having portions bent into engagement with the flanges and having other portions bent outward from the rim wall to forni feet. i 5 4C.
