PATENT OFFICE.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,621, dated March 21, 1905.
Application filed October 11, 1904. Serial No. 228,034- y To @ZZ whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, HERMANANDERSSON LINDERO'IH, a subject of the King of Sweden and -`s Norway, and a resident of Stjernsund, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part hereof.
Thisinvention relates to a folding bedstead.
The object of the invention is to provide a folding bedstead which is of a simple construction and of a great Stability when unfolded.
The invention consists chiefly in that the bedstead is furnished with end pieces which can be folded outward and side pieces which can be folded inward, the latter being hinged at one or more places in a transverse direction, while the bottom of the bed is dividedv Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the end pieces 1 and 2 are hinged to the bottom in such a manner that they can be folded outward. The bottom is made in two pieces 3 and 4, which are independent of each other. Each side piece is also made in two pieces 5 6 and 7 8, respectively, which by means of inner hinges 9 are hinged to the bottom pieces 3 and' 4. The two halves 5 6 and 7 8 of the side pieces are held together by outer hinges 10. The
division of the bottom corresponds to theV division of the side pieces, so that the joints are exactly opposite each other. When the bedstead is in an unfolded position, the side pieces and end pieces are held together by the ends of the side pieces being passed into corresponding slots in the end pieces. In order that said slots need not be too wide, the ends of the side pieces can suitably be beveled down to about half of their. thickness, as shown in the drawings. Furthermore, bolts or hooks or the like 11 may be suitably disposed so as to hold the end pieces and side pieces together.
When the bedstead is unfolded, as showni Fig. 1, it stands perfectly firm. The two halves of the bedstead are held together 'by the hinges 10, the side pieces acting as beams to bear the load of the bed. Consequently the lower hinges 10 are subjected to tension and should thereforev be very strong. By making the side pieces rather high said tension can, however, be greatly reduced. If so desired, in order to strengthen the middle of the bedstead there may be disposed at this place a pair of legs 12, which may be hinged to the bottom Vof the bedstead.
In folding up the bedstead the end pieces 1 and 2 are folded down against the sides. Then the side pieces 5 6 and 7 8 are folded inward, when their hinges 10 face upward. Now the bedstead can be folded together to half its length by means of the aforesaid middle hinges.
It is obvious that the bedstead can be divided in transverse direction in more than one place. The bedstead represented in the d rawings is supposed to be made of wood; but the invention can equally well be applied Vto beds made of iron or other suitable material.
The form of my invention shown in Figs.
3 to 5 differs from the form shown in Figs. 1
and 2 principally in that the end pieces in order to decrease the room required for the bed are divided into two pieces 13 and 14, united to each other by means of the Vhinges 15, sol that the end pieces can be folded double, as shown in Fig. 5. In order to unite the end pieces with the side pieces 5 6 or 7 8, springbolts 16 are here used, which are secured to the side pieces and pass into corresponding sockets or the like on the end pieces. By
means of the aforesaid double fold of the end pieces the advantage is also attained that the bedstead when folded up stands firmly on the hinges of the folding end pieces without requiring any support.
Having now particularly described my invention and in what manner the same may be IOO performed, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a folding bedstead the combination of, a divided bottom, end pieces hinged to the same and foldable outward, transversely-divided side pieces hinged to the parts of the bottom and Foldable inward, and hinges oonneoting the parts of the said side pieces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a folding bedstead the com bination of, a divided bottom, transversely-divided end pieces hinged to the said bottom, hinges oonneoting the parts of the said end pieces, the
latter being foldable outward, transverselydivided side pieces hinged to the parts of the bottom and foldable inward, and hinges connecting the parts of the said side pieces, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing' witnesses.
