SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,455, dated August 8, 1899.

Be it known that LWILLIAM J. HAZARD, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Golden, in the county of Jefferson and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Scissors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in buttonhole-scissors.

As heretofore constructed the forward Wall of the notch formed in each blade of the device has been of triangular shape. These walls increase in thickness from the edge of the blade to the bottom of the notch. During the operation of cutting a buttonhole-slit these thick Walls being forced through the cloth have a ten dency to tear it at the extremity of the slit nca-r the free edge of the garment.

My improvement consists in forming this wall of each blade with an incline or bevel extending from the outside of the blade inwardly and rearwardly, thus forming a sharp or thin edge in front of the notch, which edge will pass readily through the cloth Without any tendency to tear or mutilate the fabric, all as hereinafter set forth, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which is illustrated an embodiment of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the ordinary construction of buttonholescissors- Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating my improvement. Figisacrosssection taken on the line a: 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar section taken on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 illustrates the use of the old form of construction. Fig. G shows my improved construction in use.

Similar reference characters indicating corresponding parts in the views, let the numeral 5 designate the thick front wall of the notch in the old form of construction, as shown in Figs. l, 3, and 5, while the numeral G designates the tear at the slit extremity resulting from the use of this form. My improved feature is indicated at 7 in Figs. 2, et, and 6, while 8 designates the slit formed thereby, as shown in Fig. 6. It will be observed that in my improved construction the greatest thickness of the cloth-entering blade portion is located considerably forward of the front edge of the notch and passes through the fabric at a point some distance from the slit extremity. Hence the cloth will readily stretch without tearing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1.` As an improved article of manufacture, a blade for buttonhole-scissors, having the front Wall of its notch inclined or beveled to form a thin edge.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, a pair of buttonhole-scissors having both blades inwardly beveled or inclined to form thin edges forward of the notches.
