GLOVE OR MITTEN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 630,302, dated August 1, 1899.

Be it known that I, PETER P. REISENHUS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and useful Improvement in Gloves or Mittens; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the figures marked on the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.

My invention has for its object the c011- struction of gloves and mittens in which the major part of the thumb is formed in one piece with the front of the glove, so that no seams will come in the palm of the hand, and also, in connection with the seamless-thumb portion, the making of the glove so that the back may be of one kind of fabric, if desirable, while the front, with its integral thumb portion, may be of another kind of fabric.

Reference is made to the following illustrations and description, which will .make clear what features are new and claimed in this patent.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a glove to which my invention has been applied. Fig. 2 is a plan of the front portion of the glove; Fig. 3, a similar view of the back portion; Fig. 4,.a similar View of the thumb-piece, and Figs. 5 and 6 similar views of the finger-fourchettes. Fig. 7 is a detail edge view of a portion of a glove, partly broken away.

1 represents the front portion, having the integral thumb portion 2 and the index and fourth fingers cut out in substantially the shape shown in Fig. 2. The peculiarity of this front portion 1 is that the line or cut for the inner seam of the thumb is brought inwardly to the point 3, thence upwardly to the point 4:, and thence outwardly to the point 5, adjacent to the thumb-line, where it meets the outer lower edge of the index-finger portion 6, making a substantially triangular-shaped incision 7, open adjacent to the point 5. The particular shape or form of this incision or opening 7 is not essential. Its location is in the region at the baseof the thumb and between the'thuinb and the index-finger.

The thumb-piece 8 has a part 9, which projects laterally at the inner end, the edge 10 being sewed to the edge 11 of the back portion 12, the edge 13 being sewed to the edge 14. of the thumb portion 2, while the edge 15 down to the edge 10 is secured to the edge 16 of the thumb portion and follows the edges between the points 3, 4, and 5 to the point wherethe edge of the index-finger portion is sewed to the edge 11 of the back 12..

After the front is cut out, substantially like Fig. 2, the deflected base edge 17 is worked around into a straight edge, which serves to give a fullness to the glove in the palm in the neighborhood of the base of the thumb, and the shape of the opening 7 is made to 0011- form substantially to the lines of the lower portion of the edge 15 of the thumb-piece 8.

There is no novel peculiarity in the back 12. The finger-fourchettes 18 1S belong to the intermediate fingers, and the front 1 is slit at 19 in the manner shown by Figs. 1 and 2, whereby the fingers of the glove are formed.

WVhile I have used the term sewed in describing the uniting of the edges, I do not intend to limit myself to such manner of connection, as the edges may be riveted or any other known means employed.

My novel construction of the thumb is applicable to all kinds of gloves or hand-covering, including mittens and the like. By this thumb construction it will be seen that the seams in the palm, where the greatest wear comes, are done away with; also, that it enables me to make the front, including the integral seamless-thumb portion, of one kind of leather and the back of another kind of leather whenever desired.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A hand-covering provided with an integral thumb portion, a continuous deflected base edge straightened out to give a fullness to the palm along the base of the thumb, and a substantially inclosed cut-away portion in the region between the bases of the thumb and the index-finger.

2. A hand-covering provided with a separate thumb-piece having its base portion projected to one side and secured to the back, substantially as set forth.

3. A hand-covering provided with a front having an integral thumb portion and a cutaway portion between the bases of the thumb and index-finger, and a separate thumb-piece 5 having at its base a lateral projection at one side covering the cut-away portion.

4. A hand-covering provided with a front having an integral thumb portion, a cutaway portion between the bases of the thumb and the index-finger, and a continuous deflected I0 base edge straightened out to give a fullness to the palm along the base of the thumb.
