7 UNITED, STATES PATENT ries.
CHARLES JANTON OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SUSPENDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,507, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed June 9,1899. Serial No. 719,882. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES JANTON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Suspenders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has reference to suspenders; and it consists of certain improvements, all
of which are fully set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to so construct a suspender that it will be impossible for the straps or the several parts making up the suspender to become twisted or turned so as toli in a defective manner upon the wearer. To accomplish this result, I provide the suspender-straps at each end where they connect with the back button-straps and the front button-straps with pivot-joints, so that the several parts may rotate freely. In this manner the straps may be completely reversed without necessitating the loosening of the button strap or straps.
My invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved suspender complete. Fig. 2 is a full-sized elevation, with part in section, of the pivot connections adjacent to the back button-strap; and Fig. 3 is an elevation, with part in section, showing the construction adjacent to one of the front button-straps.
A A are thetwo shoulder-straps and may be adjusted as to their length by any of the usual adjusting devices. At one end these straps are pivoted, to the union-piece B by pivotjoi'nts C, and said union-piece B is itself pivoted, if desired, to the loop-strap E by a pivot-joint F, the said loop holding the rear or back button-strap E, which may be of leather, cord, or elastic material, as desired. The front ends of the straps A A are looped upon the links K, which are pivoted at J to the loop-straps H, to which the front buttonpreferably so as to be removable in any of the well-known ways. The said button-straps I may be constructed similar to the rearbnttonstrap E. The various pivots are similarly button-strap.
received between the bend of an attaching- I strap A, sewed to the ends of the shoulderstraps A A, and the shank L passes through a hole immediately at the bend thereof. The
' bearing-plate M is placed between the layers of the union-piece B, and is thereby held in place. The same construction is carried out in joining the pieces 13 and D, only in this case the loop-strap D corresponds to the attaching-strap A. l
With respect to the connection between the front ends of the straps A and the frontloopstrap H a similar shank L and bearing-plate M are employed; but in this case the bearing is placed within the loop-strap and the shank L is formed into a loop K at its top, through which the suspender-strap A is free to pass for adjustment and connection.
It is evident that, if desired, the pivot c011- nection between the parts B andD may be omitted, as the essential part of the invention is to provide means for reversing either or both of the shoulder-straps A A on the rear I have shown a suitable construction of jointed connection for the several parts which I have found excellently adapted to the purpose; but I do not confine myself to any particular character of pivot or rotatable connection except that they must be rotatable on longitudinal axes, as these may be varied in any suitable manner so long as they accomplish the f unctionherein set out. It is also evident that while the said plates may be retained in a suitable supportingstrap portion simply by being clamped therein, nevertheless they may be provided with holes, as shown at Min Fig. 2, through which stitches may pass to hold them firmly in position.
"Having now described myinventiom what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters I Patent, is as follows: I i v v 1. In a suspender, the combination of the back button-strap, with the two shoulderstraps, and longitudinally pivoted or rotatable connections betweenthe shoulder-straps and the buttonstrap.

2. In a suspender, the combination of the back button-strap, with the two shouldershoulder-straps and the button-strap comprising a union-piece carrying the button-- strap, and longitudinally-pivoted bearings connectimztheshoulder-straps with theunionpiece consisting of a metallic bearing attached to one of the parts anda rotatable pin secured therein with freedom of rotation and attached to the other of the parts.
4. In a suspender, the combination of the back button-strap, with the two shoulderstraps, and longitudinally pivoted or rot-a1 able connections between the shoulder-straps and the button-strap consisting of the union-piece B, metallic pins L, L, secured to the ends of the shoulder-straps, metallic bearings M, M, secured to the union-piece at the top, a loopstrap D'at-tachedto the button-strap, a metallic bearing M attached to the union-piece at the bottom, and a pivot-pin L secured to the loop-strap adapted to the last-mentioned bearing.
5. In a Suspender the combination of the shoulder-straps, with the front buttoh-straps,
metallic loops through which the shoulderstraps pass, and metallic longitudinal pivotjoints between the loops and the buttonstraps.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a suspender havingitssuspendenstraps pivoted to its front button-straps so as to be reversible thereon without disconnection.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a sus-
