Description

THEODOBE MACE, OF NEvV YGRK, N. Y.'
Letters Patent No. 62,652, dated lim-ell. 5, 1857.
IMPROVEMENT lll MOSSE GATES.
dige tlgttnlc muret mit tlgete tdns jutuzt uur marking um nt the sans.
'lO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:
Be it known that I, TIIEOQORE MACE, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made/and applied to use, a cert-ain new and useful Improvement in Grat-cs for Melasses and Liquids; and I do hereby declare the Following to he a full, clear, and exact description of thc said invention, reference being had to the' :innexed drawing, making part of this specification, Whereini i Figure 1 is o longitudine-l section of said gate.
Figure 2 is a plan of the sarne; and
Figure 3 is a detached sectional View of the joint ferthe handle.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
lGru-tes for molasses, tte., have heretofore been made with a eut-off plate independent of the lever-handle, so that a spring between said plate and handle has given pressure upon the eut-oli' to keep it to itsseat. ln gates of this character no device was provided for locking the gate rmly, so that changes of temperature or an accidental pull on thchandle could not cause the gate to leali'.
The nature of my said invention' consists in a tightening-screw, combined with the lever-handle, the cut-ori" plate, and the spring, whereby the gute can he clamped iirinly to the end of the nozzle, or the friction and pressure of said gate regulated as required.
In the drawin r a is the nozzle or i e screwed into or otherwise attached to the vessel containinfr the molasses or liquid. 6 is the seat around the end of vthe nozzle, against which the out-oil' plate or gate e is pressed hy the spring ol, that is Within a cup on the outer sido of the gate c, between that and the lever or handle e. f-is thc fulcruinor joint-pin for the handle e. This passes through a hole in the lugg, that is cast on one sido ot' the nozzle a. |The lever e is formed with a segment of u cylinder, as at z', iig. 2, and in the detuchcd section, iig. 3, which segment z' connects the lever irith the rear plate o of the joint, into whichthe fulorurn-pin f passes. This construction makes thoijoint-inore reliable than these heretofore constructed, becauseI the pin f is supported at both ends, and the pressure of thc gate c is taken upon the rear joint-plate e. This segment z', coming into contact with the stop Z as the gate opens, and with the stop m as it is closed, also determines the amount of motion that can be given to the gate. The gate e, at one end, has a hole for passingthe pin f loosely, and :it the other ond a notch, at j), sets over a guide formed for it upon the back of the handle e. r is 'a screw passing through the lever-handle e, and inside the coiled spring d, to the cut-oli" plate or gute e. Whe-n this screw ris tightened, the friction of the cut-oit1 e against the seat b can he reguln-te'ihso that the gate will he held iinm'ovahly, or be allowed to move with more or less friction. i
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The screw'r, passing through the levcrre, in combination with the spring CZ, that surrounds the screw e, and is within a cup on the outside of the gate c, the parts being constructed and applied in the manner and for the purposes specified. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this Fth day of December, A. D. 183C.
THEODORE MACE.
