- This invention consists in the combination of a faucet having a spring attached to its spigot, whereby the faucet, when opened to draw liquid from a cask or vessel, will be immediately closed to stop the flow when theM hand is withdrawn from the handle of the spigot, with circular stops or washers fitting upon the lower end ofthe spigot, and having projections near their pcripherics fitting into recesses in the lower or pendent part of' the faucet for the purpose of regulating the flow of liquid through the faucet to prevent the freezing thereof in the winter season, as will be hereinafter more fully described.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER BRINCKMANN, of the city, county, and Stato of New Y a new and improved Faucet; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, panying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in the combination of a faucet having a spring attached to its spigot, whereby the faucet, when opened to draw liquid from a cask or vessel, will be immediately closed to stop the flow when theM hand is withdrawn from the handle of the spigot, with circular stops or washers fitting upon the lower end ofthe spigot, and having projections near their pcripherics fitting into recesses in the lower or pendent part of' the faucet for the purpose of regulating the flow of liquid through the faucet to prevent the freezing thereof in the winter season, as will be hereinafter more fully described. In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure I is a plan or top view of my invention.

A represents the tube, and B the spigot of a faucet, the spigot being provided with an opening to admit of the liquids passing through the tube A, when the spigot is turned to bring its opening in line with the tube, the flow of the liquids being cut off when the spigot is turned so that its opening will be at right angles with the interior of the tube. This it will be seen is simply the ordinary faucet in common use, and therefore does not require a special description.
On the top of the tube A there is secured a cylindrical box, C, through which the spigot B passes, and within this box is placed horizontally a spiral spring, D, one end of which is attached to the box C, as shown at a, and th-e other end attached to the spigot B, as shown in fig. 1. This spring D has a tendency to keep thc spigot B in that position which does not allow a liquid to pass through the tube A, or, in other words, to keep the faucet in a closed state, and when the hand is applied to the handle E of the spigot, in order to open the faucet, the spring D will immediately close it when the handle F is released. By this means it will be seen that a reliable self-closing faucet is obtained. On the lower end of the spigot B there is formed a square to receive a stop, F or G, which is of circular form, and provided respectively with projections, c and o?, said projections being near or at the peripherics of the stops and at their upper surface, and fitting inra recess, c, in the lower edge of the pendent port-ion of the tube A, which encloses the lower part of the spigot. 'lhcsc stops are kept on the lower end of the spigot by means of a screw, H, as shown in g. 2. The projection c of thc stop F is shorter than the projection d of the stop G, and the former stop, F, is applied to the spigot in summer or when water will not freeze, and also when the faucet is applied to vessels containing liquids, and which are not exposed to a low temperature so as to freeze. The shortness of the projection c allows it to have suflicient movement in the recess e to admit of the spring D entirely closing the faucet, but when thc stop G is applied, the greater length of its projection (Z, and consequently short movement in recess c closing the faucet, a very small flow being allowed in order to prevent freezing.
My improvement, therefore, will effcctually obviate the freezing up of the faucet when applied to water pipes or water vessels of any kind in exposed situations, when the water will freeze if all flow through the faucet be prevented.
I am aware that springs have heretofore been used for turning thev spigot in faucets, them self-closing, but this I do not claim.
But what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
