Description

Y1 .A Pour &H. SCHILD. Regulators for Stop-Cocks or Valv'es. 4N0.149,2H'. Patented March31,1874.
lUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JETEEO FOOT AND EENEY sOEILD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN REGULATORS FOR STOP-CCCKS OR VALVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,211, dated March 31,1874; application filed March 5, 1874.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JETHRO FOOT and HENRY SCHILD, both ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and linproved Regulator-for Stop-Cocks or Valves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specicatioinin which drawing- -Figure l represents a'sectional front view of our invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the saine. Y
Similar letters indicate corresponding part-s.
This invention consists in .a drum which connects, bya chain or wire, with a double-armed lever secured to the plug of stop-co ck, said drum. being provided with an index which travels over a scale or dial in such a manner that, by turning the drum, the position otv the plug or valve can be regulated, and a stop-cock or valve can be adjusted in the required position from a distance; for instance, the stop-cock which admits gas to a building, and which is generally situated in the cellar, can be set from any portion-of the building where the regulating drum is secured. With the index and drum is combined an adjustable stop, which, when set at any desired point of the scale, prevents the index of the drum from passing this point.
In the drawing, the letter A designates aV drum, which connects, by a chain or wire, aa, with a double-armed lever, B, that is secured to the plug G of a stop-cock, or to the equivalent part of a stop-valve. In the example shown by the drawing the connection between the drum and the plug-is effected by a wire which is passed round the drum and thence over guiderollers b b to the lever B, and in order to prevent the wire from slipping it is provided with a loop, c, which is let into a cavity in the circumference of the drum.
It is obvious that in place of the wire a cha-in or rope might be used, and the lever B might be replaced by a wheel, round which said chain or wire could be passed in the same manner as it passes round the drum A.
It the drinn is situated at a considerable distance from the stop-cock-vfor instance, in a room in one of the upper stories of a building, while the stop-cock is situated in the cellarseveral sets of guide-rollers or intermediate levers will be used to effect the connection somewhat in the same manner in which bellwires are conducted throughout a building.
0n the drum A is secured an index, d, which points on a scale, c, marked on the surface of the Abed-plate, l), that supports the axis fot the drum, and also serves tov fasten said drum in the required position. Ahandle, E, serves to turn the drum, and as the drum is turned the index shows the position of the plugl or valve C. On the axis f of the drinn is secured a swivel-arm, g, the outer end of which catches under the edge of the bed-plate D, and a setscrew, 71., serves to fasten said swivel-arm in any desired position on bed-plate. When the swivel arm is secured it forms a stop which prevents the index d from passing a certain point on the scale e,'and by said stop, therefore, the point to which the stop-cock or valve may be opened or closed can be determined.
This device is applicable to gas-cocks, or to the steam-valves of heating-pipes, or to any other valve of a similar nature, where it is dcsirable to open or close the cock or valve from a distance.
Vhat we claini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. rlhe combination ot' a drum, A, chain, rope, or wire ct, lever or wheel B, and plug or valve C, with an index, d, andl dial-plate, D, substantially as shown and described.
2. The stop g, in combination with the dialplate D, index d, plug or valve O, lever or wheel B, and drum A, substantially as set forth.
JETHRO FOOT. HENRY SCHILD.
