v Mr/ A UNITED STATES" PATENT OFFICE.
LEWIS W. TRUESDELL, OF OWEGO, NEW YORK.
FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,380, dated September 21, 1880.
Application filed June 26, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that I, Lnwrs W. TRUESDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owego, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The present invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in that class of cocks or faucets in which is employed an elastic diaphragm to close or open the water-way.
The object of the presentinvention is to simplify the construction and operation of the faucet, said object being obtained by the mechanism and construction shown in the drawing, and hereinafter described.
In the accom 'ianying drawing, which represents a sectional view of my invention, A is the faucet, of any suitable metal, cast with a central chamber, B, having inlet a, forthe passage of the water. The chamber B is open at its top, and forms a seat for an elastic diaphragm, D, when the faucet is closed. The edge of the diaphragm D is supported by a circumferential flange, 0, formed upon the interior of the screw-band b, the latter receiving the screw-cap 0, having an axial plunger, 01, for compressing the elastic diaphragm down to its seat upon the open end of the chamber B, which closes the faucet and prevents the escape of the. liquid.
When the faucet is desired to be opened, all that is necessary is to slightly unscrew the cap 0, which raises the plunger d and allows the diaphragm D to spring off its seat upon the top of the chamber B. A free and unobstructed passage for the liquid is now made, the same passing from the barrel or other means of supply through the inlet a into the chamber B, thence up around the top thereof, and down and out the mouth of the faucet.
The construction and means of operation are very simple, and a faucet embodying my invention can be manufactured at a greatly-reduced cost over those of its class.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The faucet A, formed with the chamber B, inlet a, and screw-band I), having flange c, in combination with the elastic diaphragm D and vscrew-cap 0, having plunger d, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
LEWIS W. TRUESDELL.
