CUT-OFF VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 668,557, dated February 19, 1901.
Application filed October 4-, 1900. Serial No. 32 ,052. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. ENeLEN, a citizen of the United States, residingat Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Out-Off Valves, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cut-off valves, one object of the same being to provide a valve of this kind which is perfectly balanced at all points-that is, one in which there is no tendency to open when the same is closed or to close when the same is open.
A further object of the invention is to simplify and cheapen the construction of this class of valves.
The invention consists in certain features and details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure l is a plan view of my improved valve. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken centrally through the inlet and outlet ports.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
The cylindrical casing l of my improved valve is formed with an inlet-port 2 in one of the heads thereof. This port extends through a boss 3 on the head of the casing, which is provided with internal screw-threads for the attachment of the valve to a pipe or other analogous device. Said casing 1 is also provided with a discharge port or orifice 4, extending through the cylindrical sides thereof. Fitting Within the casing 1 and having its periphery lying in close contact with the inner surface of said casing is an annular cutoff slide 5, having an opening 6 therein adapted to register with the discharge-port 4:. The slide 5 is connected by means of the radial arms or spokes 6 with a central hub 7, and to the latter is attached a shaft 8, which extends through one of the heads of the casing 1 and has an operating-lever 9 thereon. By means of the lever 9 the cut-off slide 5 may be turned so as to bring the opening 6 in line with the discharge-port 4:, or it may be turned so as to throw the opening 6 out of line with the discharge-porte for the purpose of closing the valve. In order that the slide 5 may be moved to the proper extent, I secure to the head of the cylinder 1, through which the shaft 8 passes, two projections 1O 11, which serve as stops for limiting the movements of the operating-lever 9 in opposite directions. When the lever 9 is moved so as to contact with the stop 10, the opening 6 in the slide 5 is in line with the discharge-orifice 4 and the valve is open. When, however, the operating-lever 9 is moved so as to contact with the stop 11, the opening 6 in the cut-off slide 5 is out of line with the discharge-port 4 and the valve is closed.
From the foregoing description it will be observed that I have provided an extremely simple and cheaply-constructed valve for the purpose described and one which is perfectly balanced at all points. As the pressure of material entering the valve-casing 1 through the inlet-port 2 is exerted equally at all points on the inner surface of the cut-oif slide 5 there is no tendency whatever for said slide to be moved out of the position in which it was placed. Danger of accidental displacement of the slide 5, therefore, is effectually prevented, and when it is desired to open or close the valve no opposing pressure has to be overcome. The valve maybe opened just as easily with an exceedingly high pressure behind it as with no pressure.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A cut-off valve comprising a cylindrical casing having an inlet-port in one of the heads thereof and a discharge-port in the cylindrical wall thereof, a cut-off slide consisting of'an annular rim having an opening therein adapted to register with said discharge-port, a cylindrical hub and spokes connecting said rim with said hub, the periphery of said rim lying in close contact with the inner surface of said casing, a shaft extending through the head of said casing opposite said inlet-port and connecting with said hub, an operatinglever secured to said shaft, and outwardly-extending pins or projections on said casing adapted to be engaged by said lever for limiting its movements in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDERICK J. ENGLEN.
