TOlY.
$PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,962, dated May 16, 1899.
Application filed July 13, 1893. Serial No- 6B5,864. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED N. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Toys; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and. exact description of the invention,-
such as will enable others skilled in the'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of referencemarked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in-a toy; and it consists in the specific details of construction and combination of parts,as will be more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The object of this invention is to construct a toy composed of two disks suitably connected together by spindles, and when rolled along the floor or some flat surface the tendency of the elastic material and weight contained therein will cause said toy to return to the operator.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a scctional view of the device, taken through the disks, showing the Weight and elastic material to which said weight is secured. Fig. 2 is a sectional View through the spindles, showing the manner in which the weight is secured to the elastic material.
In the drawings, 1 indicates my complete invention, which consists of disks 2 and 3, secured to or connected to each other by spindles 4c in any suitable manner. To the center of said disks, at their inner sides, are se cured screw hooks or staples 5, to which are held rubber strands or other elastic material 6, the purpose of which will be hereinafter set forth. To the rubber strands is secured an arm 7, which is provided in its extreme end with two slots 8, which form three parallel fingers 8' 8 8 the central one of which stands between and the outer ones of which pass astride the rubber strands 6 when in position. The finger 8' is provided near its end with a threaded aperture 8 and the fingers 8 -and 8 are provided with smooth aperturesregistering therewith. 9 is a headed screw or belt which passes through the smooth apertures in the fingers 8 8 and engages the threaded aperture 8 in the finger 8. In order to apply the weighted lever 7, the two strands of elastic material 6 are inserted in the slots 8 8, astride' the intermediate finger 8 The screw 9 is then passed through the smooth apertures until its threaded end engages the threaded aperture in the finger S, and by tightening this screw the fingers are approximated until they clamp the strands 6, thereby holding the lever securely in posi tion. 7 When the tension or torsion is relieved by the untwisting of the rubber, it will not be thrown or jarred out of position. If the weighted arm or lever should slip along the rubber to one end thereof, it will be clear that the elastic fabric would be unevenly twisted in the rolling of the toy and the device would not operate as desired, and I overcome this danger in the manner above described. Moreover, the slotting of the end of the weighted arm permits the insertion of the rubber strands after they have been attached to the disks and necessarily avoids the necessity for threading them through holes in the arm, as was hitherto common in devices of this same general character.
To the other end of the arm 7 is secured a ball 10, which is of any heavy material, de* signed to weight said arm, keeping it in a vertical position While said device is in a rolling position, thus winding together the elastic strands to which said arm is secured.
When the device is rolled upon the floor or other fiat surface, the ball hangs in a downward position, winding the elastic strands while the device is in motion. As soon as the device ceases rolling, the tension of said wound elastic and ball reacts upon the device, causing it to roll backward, or, in other words, return to the operator.
The device is made cheaply and is very simple and operates perfectly, as before stated.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp 1. In a toy, the combinationwith a body consisting of two disks connected by spindles remote from their axial centers, hooks secured to the inner faces of the disks at central points,
and elastic strands connecting said hooks; of 1 three fingers the central one of which stands bet-ween and the outer ones pass over the strands, and means for approximating said fingers for clamping this end of the lever on the strands, substantially as set forth.
2. In a toy, the combination with two connected disks, and elastic strands extending between them at their axis; of a weighted 1ever provided at one end with three parallel fingers embracing the strands, one outermost of said fingers having a threaded aperture and the others smooth registering apertures, and a headed screw passing through the smooth apertures and engaging the threaded aperture, as and for the purpose hereinbefore set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED N. NORTON. Witnesses:
