SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 624,251, dated May 2, 1899.

Application filed July 15, 1898.

Be it known that I, JOHN GUY ROBERTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to toys; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is designed to amuse children.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompany ing drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a side and Fig. 2 a plan View of my improved toy.

In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a wheel 5, having a central shaft or axle 6, which projects a predetermined distance from each side thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and I also provide a guide-stick or handle, which is preferably composed of a flat bar 7, of wood or similar material, which is provided at one end with a handle 8, the opposite end of'which is cut away at one side for a short distance, as shown at 9, so as to form a shoulder or projection 10, whereby a cavity or recess 11 is formed, the wall of which is preferably circular in form.

ner, and the guide-stick is held so that the shaft or axle or one end thereof will rest in the cavity or recess 11, and the wheel may by this means be kept revolving or running as long as desired. The guide-stick may be held on either side of the wheel, and the wheel may be kept in a straight line by properly manipulating the guide-stick or placing the end thereof on either side of said wheel, as will be readily understood.

My improved toy is simple in construct-ion and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and is also comparatively inexpensive.

Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A toy, comprising a wheel, a central shaft or axle passing transversely through said wheel and projecting on either side thereof, said axle being approximately of uniform diameter throughout, and a detachable guide-stick pro vided at one end thereof with a hand1e,'and the opposite end of which is cut away at one side so as to form a shoulder or projection, said cut-away portion adapted to fit said axle projections and being slidably adjustable longitudinally and throughout the entire extent thereof, substantially as shown and described.
