Description

(No Mom.)
F. H. GOLVIN. HAMMER.
No. 562,581, I Patented June 23, 1896. r
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED H. COLVIN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
HAMMER.
QPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,581, dated June 23, 1896. Application filed June 29, 1892. Serial No. 438,370. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED H. COLVIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of'Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hammers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in hammers; and it consists of the construction of the heads thereof, as hereinafter described, whereby the faces of the same may be readily applied and secured thereto and removed therefrom.
To this end the heads are made of separate parts, which are clamped together by means of a nut fitted on the boss of one of said parts, the handle being secured in said boss.
It further consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation. Fig. 2 represents an end view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 4 represents an end view thereof. Figs. 5 and 6 represent other forms of the invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the head of a hammer, the same consisting of the sections B and O, the ends of which are provided with recesses D, to receive the hammer-faces E. In the peripheral walls of the sections there are openings F to receive the handles F, which may be of wood or metal, as desired. In Fig. 3, the sectionB is provided with a central boss H, which passes through the web F of the section (J, it being noticed that the handle is within the boss and the nut G is fitted on said boss and tightens against said section 0, thereby clamping the faces E between the sections.
In Fig. 5, the handle is secured in the flanges F of the sections B O, the web F not being in contact with said handle, "and the sections are clamped by a nut G on said handle bearing against the section 0.
In Fig. 6, the threaded part of the handle projects beyond the section B and the nut G2 thereon bears against the said section.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A hammer-head consisting of two sections with openings in their walls, recesses in their ends, and webs on their inner peripheries, one of said sections having a boss passing through the web of the other section and a fastening nut on said boss tightening against one of said sections, said parts being combined substantially as described.
2. A hammer-head consisting of two semicylindrical sections with openings in their walls opposite each other and recesses in their ends, detachable faces in said recesses, a handle passing through said openings, and .a clamping-nut for said sections, said parts being combined substantially as described.
