Beit know n that I, GIDEoN KELSEY PHEATT, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and. State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Oar and Oar-Lock, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of my new and improved oar and oar-lock as they appear applied to the gunwale of a boat ready for use; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the car and attachments, showing the lock and a part of the gunwale in elevation.
The invention will first be described in connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
The oar A is provided with a metal rod, B, to fit in the oar-lock G. The said rod may be attached to the oar in Various ways; but I prefer to cut away a portion of the oar, as shown at a a, to form a space or chamber to receive the said rod, so that there will be no projections on the oar. At the bottom of the space formed by cutting away the ear is fitted a strengthening-plate, b, which plate also serves to receive the bolts or screws 0 c, which pass through the ends of the rod B, for securing said rod to the oar. The rod B ismade round for about one-half its length, as shown at d, and is flattened at d, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, to adapt the rod to be placed in and removed from the narrow slot or opening 6 of the rowlock O. The said lock is formed with the shank k, that enters the rail It, and plate R, secured thereto in the usual manner. The top h of the lock is divided to form the two opposite members or check-pieces, t 2 between which the rod B is held to fulcrum the oar, and the upper ends of these members approach each other at the top to form the said narrow space or slot 6. The diameter of the round portion (1 of the rod 13 is greater than the width of the space 6, so that when the narrow or flat part d is slipped through the sloteand the oar shoved out the round portion (1, while turning freely in the oar-locl cannot be removed from the lock, and thus the oar is held securely in the lock.
In reversing the direction of rowing the oar has simply to be turned over the top of the lock.
The oar is limited in its outward movement by a shoulder, f, as shown in Fig. 1.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The ear A, having the rod B attached thereto and adapted to enter a suitable oarlock, the rod being longitudinally attached to the oar, substantially as described.
2. The oar A, having the longitudinally attached rod B, formed with the round portion cl and flat portion (2, and adapted to enter a suitable oar-lock, substantially as described.
3. The oar-lock O, formed with members i 'i, which approach each other at the top to form a narrow space, 6, in combination with the oar A, provided with the longitudinally-attached rod B, formed with the round portion (Z and fiat portion (1, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. I
4. The oar A, cut away at a, and provided with the rod B, set into the space formed in the oar, in combination with the lock 0, formed with spaced membersi t to retain the said rod, substantially as described.
5. The oar A, cutaway at a and provided with the plate b, set into the said cut-away place, and the rod 13, set into the oar adjacent to said plate I), in combination with the oarlock 0, formed with spaced members i t, to re ceive and retain the said rod B, substantially as described.
